El Almacén Wine Bar — Restaurant in San Sebastián

We chose this restaurant because it had a menu in English and French, we are comfortable with both. We ordered a bottle of wine and instead were presented with two glasses. The waitress neither spoke nor read any English or French but we managed to eventually get a bottle of wine. We ordered two main courses and a portion of fries. The fries arrived with a large platter of dried ham which we did not order. We ate the fries which were superb and after some enquiries the very large platter of ham was taken back. The second very small main course of monkfish arrived with nothing else. My wife had asked if the fish came with anything but this was not understood. It was somewhat lukewarm but otherwise good, if inadequate as a main course. When she had eaten it, my main course arrived about 15 minutes later. It was good, but just meat and sauce and in my view was unbalanced as a stand alone meal. Unlike the tables around us we were not offered water. Perhaps this restaurant does not want or need non-local custom, if this is the case please say so. We have travelled widely and this is perhap the most appalling service we have ever encountered in a restaurant at this level. Bad value, bad service, not...

fried calamri: like rubber - overcoocked, the worst I had in San Sebastian; ensaladilla de verdel: the fish is good but rhe rest is made from frozen vegies, not good; croquetas de jamon: falling apart, don’t recommend; the service an the wine are good (Txomin txacoliña). tartar de atun: spicy style - far from classic, but not bad - some might like; beef tartar: strange smell - don’t recommend. Bottom line: great service, but really bad food - the second worst place which I’ve been to in San Sebastian. Arrived in San Sebastian on Saturday night and found El Almacen while looking for somewhere to sit and have a light meal. A table for two was found and a very attentive and helpful waiter. We enjoyed three dishes from the starter menu and a couple of beers in a cheerful atmosphere. The bonus was the bus back to our hotel stopped right outside.
