I recently dined at Saltxipi Restaurant in San Sebastián, drawn by its reputation for fresh seafood and traditional Basque cuisine. Overall, the experience was enjoyable, but it didn’t quite live up to the high expectations set by its acclaim.
The ambiance of the restaurant is charming, with a rustic decor that reflects the coastal surroundings. The staff was friendly and welcoming, though the service was somewhat inconsistent, with long waits between courses that took away from the overall flow of the meal.
As for the food, there were some standout dishes, particularly the seafood options, which were fresh and flavorful. The presentation was pleasing, but a few plates seemed overly simplistic compared to what I've experienced at other local restaurants.
The wine list featured a nice selection of local options, but I felt the pairings could have been better thought out to enhance the dishes.
Overall, Saltxipi offers a solid dining experience with its fresh seafood and welcoming atmosphere, but it could benefit from more consistent service and a stronger execution of certain dishes. If you’re in the area, it’s worth a visit, but there are certainly other options in San Sebastián that offer a more memorable culinary experience. A...
Read moreDisappointing, rude and snooty. We should have left as soon as the waitress laughed at me for asking if there was a set menu (which is in the photos on the maps listing).
My husband almost broke his tooth on the baked crab starter - 5 pieces of shell/bone were in it. Shell in the crab salad too. The owner was quite unapologetic when we raised it.
We ordered 2 starters, 2 mains. The 2nd main never arrived. The parsley sauce was so lacking in flavour and salt, that in the end we were actually glad the 2nd main didn’t make it. Every table also had to pour their own wines, which you don’t expect at this price point. Was generally hard to get wait staff’s attention.
In the plus, the fish cheeks were nicely cooked and the baked crab was delicious. Which is why I give two stars, not one. But other than that they mostly offer only 2 fish, with or without the bland parsley butter sauce. Their attitude is inexcusable. I can’t recommend based on this. No one should have to finish up an upscale lunch upset with how they...
Read moreWe were excited to try a local Gros restaurant upon recommendations. From reviews we thought a tasting menu was the way to go, NO! DO NOT ORDER TASTING MENU. The plates came on top of eachother and we felt rushed through the meal until the end. We began with a greeting for service, but then service went down from there. We had a bottle of cider to begin. We told the waiter we still wanted the wine pairing, but only had one glass near the end of the meal. Foie gras was delicious. Both crab appetizers were more than ordinary. The spider crab, we could not even finish, it was overcooked or reheated. Entrees were okay. Munk fish, nothing to write about, steak and foie gras, more tasteful, although steak was quite fatty. Dessert was the best part of the meal. So disappointing for a meal in San Sebastian. For the money, best bets would be...
