We went here because of a stellar review on the website “culinary backstreet”.The review spoke of a chalkboard menu, friendly people, a joyful place full of regulars, with delicious food fresh from the market. While the food was tasty, the service and atmosphere were disappointing. We were placed in a small stark white brightly lit room with 4 tables all speaking American English, with acoustics so bad that you could hear everybody’s conversations. Don’t go here expecting a local crowd. I am not sure if they stick all English speakers in one room, or if there were only English speakers eating in the restaurant? The menu was the same menu as in the review from months ago. The review’s claim that the food was based on the market of the day is apparently not true. The service was utterly indifferent. No welcome. No thanks for coming. No explanation of the menu. The wine list was reasonably priced but of mixed quality. Natural wines. Some well made, some flawed. So you will have some tasty food if you eat here, and the prices are reasonable. But the loud cell-block of a dining corner and the indifferent owner and staff make you wish you had...
Read moreThis was my favorite place i discovered on my second trip through Basque Country. Every dish had incredible flavor and was amazingly balanced (as an unpretentious food lover I really don’t know how to describe it other than that). Honestly.. this chef is top class. Everything we had was so good.. I’d for sure get the bonito and albondigas (meatballs). There was a good selection of wine with a glass being less than €3!! Having had my fair share of food on this trip including Azurmendi, this would be the one place I’d make sure to come back to every time I was in the area.
They were very friendly and also spoke English which was nice (my Spanish is okayish) but the menu on the wall was entirely in Spanish which makes sense given the location further away from the tourist areas. This is clearly a local hotspot (and rightfully so) as it was pretty much packed the...
Read moreThis place is a hidden gem. In a city with so many amazing places that are constantly evolving and changing this one is surely due to hit off big. The couple that own it are Columbian and Italian and bring their influences to the pintxo world whilst maintaining a Basque influence. PLUS, compared to some of the old town places etc there is a real value for money here. I had a languistine ceviche and baby salmon with mint and some other things one evening and double took as to whether I was being served Raciones or pintxos. It was pintxos. Front of house Lina is an absolute delight. Another visit saw me have the mackerel and the cows tongue. Both incredible. Come here it is a...
