Zmare — Restaurant in San Sebastián

Ok, so first of all it was by the best service I ever experienced in restaurants and that moment made my experience whole better. I remember Javier, a small dude with curly hair, very nice to me with the service, I had a small talk with him, where is he from and so on, I mean, not many do that, a big plus for communication and good vibes! Great in recommendations, very firendly and open, he makes you feel like home. The food was tasty, I ate some beef and it was perfect cooked, soft and tasty. The view is incredible, you can watch over the beach and look at the waves or people to feel the vibe of place. I ate on the terrace and it was perfect! The care for details is also ok spot, they borught me some starter on the house soo fancy, haha, nice. Finally, I got as a bonus a small dessert on the house at the end to see how it is, and I have to say that it was soo good. Ah, and cheers to Javier for helping me with the Sangria on To-Go, I was in a rush and I had to go in time. It was by the best Sangria I drink, and strong. 💪🏻 Good job, as an old say, it is the people who make a place special, not the other way around.

I am absolutely incensed! I just left this place and was going to go back as drinks were good, octopus amazing! BUT when I went to pay, they charged me 2.90 euros as I was a solo diner. Solos unite. Im a widow, I’m meant to sit at home and mope??? First time ever have I been punished for having the guts to travel alone. Now that is off my chest…. I wouldn’t mind if I had one drink and one meal, but I had two drinks and two meals and paid as a ‘solo’ 60 euros which is 100 AUD! Before they charge a solo, maybe check to see if my bill is an average spend per person. Needless to say, I did not tip. Am I to face this discrimination thru Spain? I travel the world always, and NEVER experienced this. Needless to say, I will not be back. Their prawn salad had five tiny prawns, see picture. The rest is potato salad with alot of tuna. Maybe call it tuna salad! The tiny prawns were dressing only. I had to ask for the olive oil 4 times that I paid for with the bread! Anyway, single traveller,...

The front desk was very friendly, unfortunately the waitress was not.

We came for dessert and mentioned this on arrival. We also requested a bottle of water when being seated. The water did not arrive so I poured the remaining water from a bottle I had into a glass. This upset the waitress who rudely said “you can’t have that, this is a restaurant”. I tried to explain I had requested water already but she didn’t want to hear me out. She then went straight over to the other waitresses to gossip about us. The waitresses then gave us dirty looks throughout our service. Our food arrived and they had not given us dessert cutlery despite the insistence of restaurant etiquette. The brownie and cheesecake were very tasty but it was hard to enjoy with the uncomfortable atmosphere we had been put in.
