Google restaurant reviews have 3 categories and I do not hesitate to give Bar Bergara full marks in every one.
A quick internet search lead my wife and I to Bar Bergara on our 1st night of a 5 night break in San Sebastián. We passed many other quiet and empty restaurants on a rainy Wednesday in October before finding it and were immediately encouraged by the fact that it was buzzing with locals and, although arriving unannounced we secured a table.
A unashamedly anchovy influenced menu assaulted our taste buds with many different variations and options. Our young waiter, Frederick (Freddy) was super patient as we struggled with the language and he happily explained in perfect English, each dish and recommended the most beautiful Bordeaux red (of which I had 3 glasses).
Dessert was just as good (rum tart and tiramisu) but the best bit as I alluded to at the beginning of this review, the atmosphere really made the difference here. You can’t buy a good buzz/feel/vibe in a restaurant, it’s just kinda there…or sometimes it isn’t. Well this place has it in abundance and it really makes it a special place.
9 small plates , 5 glasses of red, 2 desserts and an espresso all came to...
Read moreFood is good, dont get me wrong. I give this bar 1 star because of how they took advantage of me. I asked the server for a recommendation for a pintxo (singular). He asked me to trust him and said that he would bring me out their star pintxo. I thanked him and he brought out the fried shrimp, which I must admit was quite good. Then he brought me out 6 more pintxos that I did not order nor want. I was shocked and confused but it was not a big deal because I had some friends in the bar who I called over to help me eat the extra pintxos. I remembered that I had told the server that I was going to trust him. After I had finished, my girlfriend (a local) sat down next to me and said that she just wanted to order 2 pintxos. The server said OK and brought out 5! We were flabbergasted because it was obvious that the bar just wanted to take advantage of us. I used to frequent this bar... but after such poor service I cannot recommend this place. There are much better, more honest...
Read moreDefinitely not worth your money. Súper expensive for what it is. We came here the first night as we saw the really good reviews. The tapas were nothing special but at the end we paid over 110 euros for a couple of tapas and glasses of wine. Each croqueta is 5 euros (normally at any other tapas bar everything is half price and weren’t even that good!). The small and cold pinxos started from 3€ the piece and as you can’t see the price anywhere, you don’t know what you’re getting into. We’re happy to pay when is worth it but here definitely wasn’t. There are literally hundred of better places that you can try in San Sebastián for half price and more flavorful. I think that they took advantage of the fact that they are in the “Michelin’ selection and decided to start ripping clients off. Next to us another table said the same thing, the most expensive tapas and not even worth it. Take 5 more minutes to search, you will certainly find something better not far from...
