Bad bacteria after eating here. Food tastes great! And, then you get deathly sick.
Diagnoses as Campylobactor (Spelling?) similar in severity to Salmonella or e-coli. The Utah health department called after my diagnosis upon returning to the US. They explained that this bacteria lives in the gut of various animals, and is commonly transmitted when an unsanitary restaurant prepares a raw meat on a work surface, then later prepares another food, like a salad, on that surface. The bacteria is killed in the meat by cooking, but you get sick from the bacteria which passed to the salad.
My wife and I had the suckling pig (Cuchinillo). It was wonderful! Many wonderful meat dishes were being served all around us. Excellent tastes. No doubt the kitchen spends a great deal of time preparing the suckling pigs, lambs, chickens, etcetera. Too bad they didn't sanitize the work areas before they then prepared my salad!!!!
Speculation of course as to their kitchen practices. But, what is certain is that about eight hours after eating at Casares Restaurant, literally in the shadow of the Roman aqueduct, in the huge open-air dinning area with dozens of outdoor tables, I started feeling queezy. Within 24 hours I was nauseous, vomiting, and quite sick with extreme diarhhea. The next 10 days I was horribly ill with the most horrendous diarrhea, dehydration, and stomach symptoms. Another 10 days after that I was weak and still not fully recovered
I went to multiple doctors, both in Spain and in the US, and suffered the most horrific flight back to the US three days after getting sick, four days after eating at Casares, wearing an adult diaper for the diarrhea, and wishing desperately to be in my own bed, not sitting in an airplane.
The next day my doctor in the US had me give a stool sample and the following day contacted me with the results and prescribed yet a stronger antibiotic. The day after that the Utah health department called to determine where I had been infected with such a serious food-born bacteria.
I originally wrote a one sentence review. But, as the Casares restaurant chose to reply, call me a liar, and claim that I didn't even eat at their restaurant (without even bothering to find out who I am or contact me or look into my case) I felt provoked to share the graphic and extended details.
Hey, Casares, Search your credit card records for _ Steele on June 19th, 2019, bill for 65.10 Euros, Visa ending in _ 9402. You will find a charge for two people who had the suckling pig.
Yeah, we ate at your unsanitary restaurant and only wish there was a way to get compensation for the horrible ordeal your contaminated food caused. If we were in court I would be asking for medical costs, drug costs, the three days of my vacation you ruined, two weeks of lost work, and pain and suffering for 10 to 20 days. And yes, I have the medical and credit card records to prove it.
If anyone knows how to contact the appropriate health department or government agency in Spain to do some inspections, I would certainly like to make a full report and send them my credit card receipts and...
Read moreI got super sick for over 10 days and had 3 doctor visits after eating here. Stool sample showed Campylobacter bacteria typical of undercooked/raw poultry in 3rd world countries. Don't eat the Cuchinillo here! Stay away from Restaurante Casares! Bad sanitary practices in this kitchen.
The Utah Health Department contacted me after my diagnosis with Campylobactor bacteria about six days after eating at Casares and three dyas after returning to the US. They explained that a common vector for the transmission of the bacteria is for the rawe meat with the bacteria to be prepared on some surface, then that same surface to be used to prepare another food, or even the same food after cooking. Yes, the cooking kills the bacteria in the food, but then the bacteria left on the food prep surface is re-introduced to the cooked food from the contaminated surface.
Revision: it is now 35 days since I was infected by the food at Casares restaurant. Within eight hours I started to feel ill. Within 24 hours I had vomiting, diarreah, and severe stomach problems. Nothing I ate in the days or hours preceeding my Casares meal would have been likely to cause the illness, and the timeframe after Casares is very typical of Campylobacter infection. I had HORRIBLE stomach illness for about 10 days, dehydration, three medical visits, three antibiotic prescriptions, then finally some relief. My damaged stomach remained very delicate and I was weak for another 10 days and am still a little bit weak and have a somewhat delicate stomach after 35 days. Like Salmonella and e-coli, this is a very serious bacteria.
RESPONSE to owner response. Yes, I ate at your restaurant in the shade of the viaduct and payed with a credit card, (Visa in the Name of Roger Steele ending in ___402) June 19 for 62.10 Euros. So you have a record and KNOW that I ate there, you lying horrible person! You belong in jail and your restaurant should be closed and your staff re-educated regarding sanitary practices.
Really BAD business practice to insult the integrity of the customer you gave food poisoning to. You've motivated me to search out your Spanish health department and ask to file a formal report. I have credit card records and medical...
Read moregreat experience: the place: we had lunch inside, at street level, in a very quiet area, with very very subtle ambient music. No noise at all from either the outside or the bar area. Excellent.
the service: very proffessional and kind. Excellent
