Zero stars is not an option apparently. What an experience. The bottom line is that if a restaurant in any country serves you food that could make you seriously ill, their apology should be to not seek to charge you for anything, not just take the cost of the health-threatening dish off the bill because that's the law as in this case. That's not an apology, not in any country. My opinion is that this is a desperate establishment lacking in any morailty or grace. Ironically, it started well, my wife and I both enjoying a glass of local red wine and sharing a plate of cold meats and cheese. We should have read the signs. At the table next to us the lady tucked into her lamb and after a few mouthfuls her husband called the waiter over. 'Congelado' he told them. The meat was still frozen in the middle. The couple left, apparently having to pay for what they had already 'enjoyed'. My main arrived, a bean and pork casserole. My wife wanted me to eat while it was hot and, having waited a little, I started. Then I finished. My wife was still waiting for her meal. Eventually it came. The kitchen had learned nothing. It was frozen in the middle. This is when we left, only to be called back and told we had to pay for 'all the good stuff'. I gave my opinion on that in a manner that left the rest of the restaurant in no doubt as to what was occurring. When the manager pushed my arm, we decided there was no more conversation to be had. You'd think that might be the end of it. But no. One of the waiters followed us up the road, shouting obscenities and giving off a very threatening manner. (No doubt he'll say we were being insulting.) He called for the police. Two nearby motorcycle officers came over. Fortunately one of them spoke enough English and was of a sympathetic nature to be able to take an interest. He explained the law. We had to pay. I gave the unpleasant waiter what was owed and then spent time using the Portuguese I speak mixed with English to talk about morality, food hygiene, complaint procedures and bad management practises. These local officers were a credit to their training in civil order and to the people that shaped their humanity. Quite the opposite to those people whose paths we sadly crossed at La Antigua Abaceria. A shocking place. You really...
Read moreMy wife and I went here on a weekday night around opening time. The location was not entirely clear since the restaurant moved a few doors down and it was well out of the main street so we were unsure if the restaurant was actually open or not.
The new location has four tables that are a little cramped, but there are three standing areas that you can eat at. When we arrived, there was only one person both waiting and preparing food, but later on another person joined to help wait. We recommend arriving early to be served promptly and be seated otherwise expect to wait for a while standing if you arrive past 9:00 PM. The person serving us was still very kind and patient as we looked through the menu, so we had a good time.
We were recommended this location for its oxtail stew and we definitely consider that the highlight since the meat fell right off of the bone and the portion size was far more than we could finish. Additionally, we weren't charged for having olives, and these were some of the largest olives we had seen in a restaurant.
We also ordered spinach and chickpeas, a charcuterie board and toast with raw cod and salmorejo. This was too much for my wife and I to finish since the portion sizes for everything was far more generous than we expected. I was not personally a fan of the toast with cod since it came with olive oil on top and I was eating too much oily foods and olives already, but my...
Read moreOK foods, terrible service. We went to the Antigua side for tapas but they didn’t have space. We were gestured to the other side. It had a lot more tables. We were pointed to a table next for the toilets. And the waiter kept talking and joking with other tables without coming to us. We raised our hands couple times and nobody saw us. 20-30 minutes later he came by and we wanted to order tapas. He said “no tapas”, gave us a menu that listed tapas amongst other dishes...another 20 minutes gone by before he came back to us...the 3 tables that came much after us already ordered and had couple dishes out. We tried to order couple tapas, and he repeated no tapas. We pointed to the table next to us with couple small dishes (artichokes and sardines on bread) and asked if those were tapas. He said, ok, those are possible here...we ordered couple more dishes from the non-tapas menu and a few drinks. We had our foods in reasonable time. But felt like we were ignored and under-serviced. It’s been 1.5 hrs and we barely had the waiter coming to us 2 times and had 4 small dishes. We tried to get someone attention to get the bill with no success. If we walked out, nobody would’ve noticed...We walked to the counter and had to get someone’s attention to...
