I spent a memorable three weeks in Spain this summer - landing in Valencia, making my way inland to Merida and then down to Alhaurin El Grande. I love Spanish food, and authentic - cheap - tapas. This place outdid any other cervecerias encountered, by far. A bonus? No other tourists, or they only came for the beer.
My favorite (ordered maybe 7 or so times) was their Gambas Al Ajillo - delicious, huge shrimp cooked in olive oil with garlic and chili peppers, with toast to garnish. This dish never failed to please, no matter what time of day I ordered it. (Pictures are separate orders. Taking pictures of food is ridiculous, but I promise it tasted as good as it looks).
They are open at hours other places might not be - before 1 pm for lunch, and before 8 pm for dinner. Nice, because sometimes all I wanted was this...and no place else makes it so well. I did look, and try.
Near to the beach, but not so near that it's super crowded. Polite staff, cheap drinks,...
Read moreWhat a fun place! Great energy, wonderful scene and so many food choices. The place is a large marketplace made up of stalls serving cooked food, fruits, pastries, candies, charcuterie, seafood, cheeses, wine and more. The only drawback is it was too crowded, and it was hard to navigate. Also, while I didn't necessarily have to sit down, it would have been nice to at least have found a place to set my plate and beverage down.
You also have to be careful with how much you spend. We were cavalierly trying a little of this and a little of that, and before we knew it, we had dropped some coin. So maybe do a couple trips around the place and make note of the handful of items you really want to try.
We only got here on our last night in Madrid, which is a shame as I could have come here every day for a week and not had the same items, so find this place early on your visit to give yourself time to go back...
Read moreHidden gem. In plane sight. Located on busy crossroads. Where the people from valencia meet their Harbour. Very nice terrace with almost 360° view, in the sun all day. People passing by. Very good kitchen. Apart from the delicious menu 'à la carte' going from tapas, over salads, bocadillos, paella, hamburgers to combined dishes, there is every day a menu from 1330 till 1600. For 13.50 euro you get to choose from 4 dishes as starters and 4 dishes as main course. Coffee, bread or desert included. On WE the price (sat-sun) of the same menu is 17.50 euro. Which is still a fair price for what you get. For the USA people : prices include everything. You tip what you want. If you do not tip, nobody will treat you dfferent. A tip will allways be appreciated as a personal compliment, not as an obligation from your side. BTW, I go there at least once a week. Never have I been...
