MADRE ❖ EL CABANYAL — Restaurant in Valencia

Madre reopened under new owners and they really got things right. The atmosphere with the new extra terrace outside instantly feels like you are on holiday on a tropical island.

The cocktails are very good, the bar and the drinks they offer are spot on.

The food is an eclectic mix of delicious smaller dishes and bigger main dishes. We love just ordering a couple and sharing them. Prices are very much OK. You can make it expensive but its also easy not to and still eat great.

Some of our food favourites are the tuna with guacamole and the spicy chicken.

Madre works great as a restaurant but it's definitely also a place where you can have drinks with friends till late in the evening, on the lovely terrace. Inside there is often a DJ playing nice tunes. For me it's a great mix between restaurant and going out, whether you are still going clubbing until the early morning afterwards or not.

Lastly, they have lovely people working there, like Robert who went out of his way to get us a nice table for 15 people and then made sure everything was good when we had our first drinks.

I wonder if they have plans to expand with a small club since they have dancing in their logo...and seem to have place in the back? That would be...

Edit - another visit after they reopened from the winter. My review below still stands, if anything the service is even better, with a lovely friendly and attentive approach.

The other notable change is the quality of the food - it's really been taken up a level and the influence from the amazing Fumiferro team is a really welcome gear shift.

The pork ribs were exceptionally good and the salads are extremely well dressed and something a little special and different from the usual offerings in Valencia.

We had my wife’s birthday here - 16 of us. The team could not have been more helpful and accommodating.

The food was excellent - and be warned, generous portions!

The cocktails are very, very good too - especially the pisco sour, espresso martinis and mezcal mule.

Do not recommend. We ordered the vegetable plate, champions as side and papas arrugadas. The champions were cold so we sent them back (since they cool easily) but they came back cold again. Half of the vegetable wasn’t cooked through and the mocho sauce was very runny so they didn’t stick to the potato. For this price we expected a higher quality of food or service. The staff did not seem to be trained well, as they did not pay attention, interrupted one of us while ordering and one of the kitchen staffs ate while cooking! The music was good but atmosphere was nothing special. We didn’t have high expectations but still left...
