I rarely leave a negative review, but the experience at the Department of Coffee was awful. To start off with, I ordered 2 eggs with bread and a Caramel Macchiato. The 2 eggs with bread were ok. Then when I first got the Caramel Macchiato (Rs.1400+) had an ant inside the glass (inside the foam - I sadly didn't capture a photo at this time as I thought it was a coincidence). The seasoning bottles on the table had ants all over as well. I immediately informed the staff about it, and a few minutes later they got me a “new” Caramel Macchiato. Trusting that they remade it, I started drinking it; however mid-way I noticed another Ant inside the cup.(Image attached). I immediately requested to speak to the manager and informed him that I didn’t visit their shop to drink coffee with ants and said I want to pay for the bread and leave as I was not happy with the experience thus far. When an issue happens once, they should be extra careful the second time. I asked for the bill and gave the card to pay and I noticed that for the 688.05 payment, they have cut 6880.05. This also, I noticed and had to show them to get it fixed. If I didn’t check the slip at that time, it would have been a big problem later. Anyway after talking to the manager again, they reversed the payment and got the original amount due. (Image attached). I immediately left and have no intrest in going back again due to these poor standards. Hope they improve their food standards especially because no one goes to a Colombo 7 cafe to consume food/drinks with ants. A mistake can happen once, I’m fine with that, but the same thing happening twice with the ants? The tables also weren't clean and no one had put any attention in to that. That’s unacceptable and esiecally mismanaging the bill was a major letdown as this kind of incident hasn’t happened to me before. The manager offered to make me a free Caramel Macchiato takeaway, but I declined that and walked away after they rectified the payment.

From the moment I stepped into this captivating coffee haven, aptly named the "Department of Coffee," I knew I was in for an extraordinary experience. Nestled in the heart of our bustling town, this gem offers not just a cup but a journey through a myriad of coffee varieties, each with its own unique story and flavour. The customer service here is nothing short of exemplary. The staff, with their encyclopaedic knowledge of coffee, are not just baristas but true coffee artisans. They guide you through their extensive selection with such enthusiasm that you can't help but feel their passion for coffee. It's this personal touch that makes each visit memorable. The atmosphere of the cafe adds to its charm. With a decor that balances modern chic with cosy comfort, it's a space where time slows down, allowing you to savour your coffee in a serene environment. The background music, a subtle blend of soothing tunes, complements the ambience perfectly, making it an ideal spot for both coffee connoisseurs and casual visitors alike. Let's not forget the delectable side dishes that accompany the coffee. Whether a buttery croissant or a slice of rich, decadent cake, each item is carefully chosen to enhance your coffee experience. Admittedly, this café might not fit the 'budget-friendly' category, but every penny spent here feels like an investment in a remarkable experience. For those who appreciate the finer nuances of coffee, a visit to the 'Department of Coffee' is a must. It's not just a café; it's a destination that celebrates the culture and art of coffee in every sip. In summary, for those seeking a truly immersive coffee experience where quality, service, and atmosphere converge to create something extraordinary, the 'Department of Coffee' awaits. Your taste buds and your soul will thank you for it.

I was interested in coming here as I had seen the place crowded while passing by multiple times. Finally, I made a stop today and entered the cafe. A nice atmosphere at first, calm music and nice plants with a stunning view on the racecourse. We got welcomed by the staff and got a table by the window. Service was a bit slow and not all servers were able to explain what kinds of coffees are being served which is disappointing. Our server had to send someone else over to explain what a Coffee Bonbon is.

They have a very very extensive menu in which I almost got lost into as there are way too many choices.

I had Turkish eggs which were very disappointing as they were clearly not the usual Turkish style but more Spanish style. Too salty, too much tomato sauce and only a mini bit of garlic yogurt. No dill or poached eggs as promised on the menu. We also had hash browns, clearly not the typical hash brown we all know but some sort of fried omelette and potato mix. You could taste the oil more than the potatoes.

The only positive experience was the coffee we had which was yummy. Although an usual afogato is served with less ice cream.

The place has a big staff but they are not so well trained in my opinion. We were not asked for refills, unless we would make eye contact they would not come to ask if everything is ok.

I am not sure if I would recommend this place as our food was disappointing. I would recommend it for its coffee. Hope they will improve as it has a...
