Restaurant Review: The Bavarian German Restaurant & Pub – Colombo
Having enjoyed a pleasant visit to The Bavarian German Restaurant and Pub on a previous trip to Colombo, we were eager to return. Unfortunately, this year’s experience was markedly different—and not for the better.
On our first attempt, a Friday evening around 18:00, the restaurant was relatively quiet, yet we were curtly turned away. The individual handling bookings was dismissive and unhelpful, stating flatly that no tables were available without a reservation. Despite the restaurant being largely empty and our assurance that we only needed a quick meal for two, we were told the next seating was at 21:30—even though most tables were booked only from 19:30. Our request to dine quickly and leave before then was refused. Disappointed, we had a drink at the bar while waiting for an Uber and left.
Still hopeful, we decided to give the restaurant a second chance on our last night in Colombo. This time, we made a booking for 20:00 and arrived at 19:45. Once again, the same staff member claimed not to find our reservation. Thankfully, another employee located it and pointed us to table 21—an unprepared table with just one chair. No one showed us to it, and when we asked to switch, we were denied, despite at least three empty booths in view. Ironically, a couple arriving after us was seated in one.
To make matters worse, a large, boisterous party dominated the dining room, making it nearly impossible to hold a conversation. Staff initially ignored our request to intervene. Only after repeated complaints did the manager address the group, though the noise quickly resumed.
Although the food was delicious, the poor customer service and chaotic atmosphere completely ruined our last night in Colombo. We only remained to eat because we were tired and hungry—otherwise, we would have walked out and never returned. Ultimately, we left without even finishing our meals. Regrettably, what was once a charming and enjoyable venue has suffered a disappointing decline. We won’t...
Read moreParking in that narrow gravelly strip has long been an annoying beginning, but the promise of the best schnitzel in town used to make it worthwhile. Valet parking is offered to compensate, but the valet (at least on this occasion) was not particularly friendly nor helpful. The staff inside are alright, and the man who answers the phone and also waits at table makes an effort to be helpful and pleasant. Drops of water fall on the table from the a/c - and on you depending on where you sit. Like in several other establishments, the pre-tax price is stated in the menu with a note below on the tax percentages. Merely stating the nett price would help avoid the mental arithmetic. There are TV screens with sports programs going on since the branding is as restaurant and pub: although cricket in a german restaurant is incongruous, sri lankans probably want it - along with fried rice at international pizza and burger joints. Such corruptions of the bavarian experience is arguably tolerable. However when the core value offering is compromised, it is a cause for concern. For example, what was served with the buns, and called butter was not butter but some margerine like fat spread. The oil used for frying also has an unwholesome taste associated with unnatural ultra-processed oils. Finally, an impression received on this occasion (but not an objective measurement) - having patronised this establishment occasionally since its inception, was that the pork in the schnitzel while still large in surface area, is a lot thinner in height than it used to be. The plates are still large but the mocktail and coffee glasses/s are disproportionate in size. The Bavarian certainly needs to up it's game - if not, opportunity might be taken by another to provide high quality food and an authentic german experience to...
Read moreThe Bavarian in Colombo, Sri Lanka, is an unique dining establishment that effortlessly transports you to a charming old wooden bar in Europe. The atmosphere is truly amazing, evoking a sense of being in another time and place. The vintage outlook is complemented perfectly by the beautifully synchronized Christmas decorations, creating an enchanting and festive setting.
When it comes to the food, The Bavarian does not disappoint. Despite the occasional possibility of delays in food being served, the dishes are undeniably amazing and tantalizing to the taste buds. The flavors are rich, and each bite is a culinary delight. Whether you're savoring traditional Bavarian cuisine or exploring new flavors, the food at The Bavarian exceeds expectations.
The service provided by the hospitable staff is commendable. They are attentive, friendly, and ensure that your dining experience is enjoyable. However, one area that could use improvement is the management of table turnover. While the restaurant is prompt in honoring booking times, they do not actively monitor how long people stay, leading to potential delays for those who arrive on time. Implementing a system to manage table turnover effectively would help minimize wait times and enhance the overall dining experience.
In conclusion, The Bavarian in Colombo offers a remarkable experience. The incredible atmosphere, reminiscent of an old wooden bar in Europe, the beautifully synced Christmas decorations, the delectable food despite possible delays, and the hospitable service all contribute to a memorable visit. While improvements in table turnover management would be beneficial, it doesn't overshadow the overall excellence of...
