Heritage Cafe and Bistro — Restaurant in Galle

This place has an awesome vibe. The modern industrial decor and (definitely not annoying) electronic house music really set the tone for the meal. The staff is friendly and attentive yet not overbearing. The cocktails menu is limited but creative, and the drinks have a nice amount of alcohol in them (which seems to be rather rare in Lanka or, at least, in Galle). I think the glass wines are also fairly good, though I only tried the Shiraz and Chardonnay. Dishes here are consistently good. I really enjoyed the crab curry (comes in a clay pot !! but you'l have to crack the crab yourself), and my friend always got the prawn curry and saffron rice, which was out of this world. We also thoroughly enjoyed the soups, both the roasted pumpkin and the seafood chowder. A word of caution, though -- the chowder is not the traditional, northern US chowder we were expecting. It had a Sri Lankan spin and a fantastic taste. I would recommend this place over and over. I hope its fan base...

I had a very bad experience. I was alone, and shown to a table right in the middle where everyone walks by. Seeing that a few 4-seat tables were empty, I asked another table, but the waiter basically ordered me to sit there and then just walked away, take it or leave. I was too tired to go find someplace else, so I ordered the daily special, hoping for a quick dinner. But I had to wait almost an hour for that daily special. I asked for the WiFi password to while the time, and was told "WiFi broken", although I could clearly see a live SSID. I guess the waiter didn't want to divulge the password to me? After about 45 minutes with just a Coke, I intercepted a waiter (that spot made it easy) to complain. The waiter just nodded and went away. Two minutes later, my order appeared in front of me. I'm not quite sure what to make of that. The food was much too salty and overcooked. So maybe the cook had just forgotten he had my order...

Ive been to galle many times but never really stayed for an evening or 2, this trip I tried to pick out some select places. After a 20hr journey, out of season I started here. Actually, i booked accommodation across the road from there Old Dutch Hospital - where several newer, a bit more cool, establishments have sprung up recently, so I could try most of them in a short period. There wasn't too much choice, and to be honest - we almost left, because couldn't pick 2 meals (and I'm not fussy but don't come to Asia to have frozen burgers etc), but eventually settled on mutton curry and vegetable curry. Both were absolutely great. Washed down with 2 lion beers. Lovely. Even ordered a second (starter) meal because I was still hungry after my trip... a spicy calamari dish - yum. A little expensive, but actually not that bad in galle, but for the quality.. 5 stars. Great service and music...
