Galle the capital city of the Southern Province of Sri Lanka is a beautiful town with a World Heritage Site to its name and which is primarily responsible for its popularity with tourists. The Galle Fort which is a 300-year-old Dutch Fort is one of the most popular tourist attractions, but you can find a number of other historical buildings to view as well. This historic city is nothing less than a delight to explore on foot. The endlessly exotic old trading ports with imposing Dutch-colonial buildings, ancient mosques, and churches, grand mansions and museums in Galle makes this place look something out of an adventure novel. Wandering its rambling lanes you’ll pass stylish cafes, quirky boutiques and impeccably restored hotels owned by local and foreign artists, writers, photographers, and designe Museums In Galle And Explore The museums in Galle have a number of deep secrets and stories enclosed within waiting to be explored by the adventurous hearts smitten by wanderlust. What a disappointing experience at Galle Marine Museum. Me and my husband came all the way from Colombo to explore Galle. We love museums and this was on our list. But honestly, the visit was ruined by one ridiculous rule and one very rude staff member. We were at the entrance taking a few pics and short videos—something we’ve done in many museums before—when a local guy came and scolded us like we had done something illegal like we have committed a crime . check bad reviews about this meseum. They have also mentioned about same dark skinned guy who has beardApparently, you can take photos here, but not videos. Seriously, what’s the point of that?

If they think people won’t visit after seeing a video, they clearly haven’t been on social media lately. We see tons of videos of Ella and Sigiriya every single day—does that stop people from going? No! If anything, it makes more people want to visit. We actually found out about this museum because of a video. Videos are free advertising!

We weren’t doing TikTok dances or being disrespectful, just recording so we could share it later. But the staff member’s tone was so unprofessional and unnecessarily harsh. And the worst part? We’re Sri Lankans too, yet got treated like that.

The National Museum in Colombo—ten times bigger—doesn’t have such a silly rule and their staff are polite. Galle Marine Museum could easily attract more visitors if they were more welcoming. Tourism here isn’t doing terrible, but it could be so much better. Sadly, with outdated mindsets like this, Sri Lanka will keep being a...

I had an absolutely wonderful experience visiting the National Maritime Museum in Galle! From the moment I entered, I was impressed by the organization and the wealth of fascinating exhibits. The museum offers a deep insight into Sri Lanka’s rich maritime history, including the spice trade, naval battles, and ancient seafaring traditions.

The displays are thoughtfully curated, with a mix of ancient artifacts, ship models, maps, and interactive exhibits that make the visit both educational and engaging. I especially loved the life-size ship models, which provide a realistic sense of the craftsmanship and scale of historic vessels. The way the museum presents stories about explorers, traders, and maritime culture really brings history to life.

The staff were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, always willing to answer questions and share interesting tidbits about the exhibits. The museum is well-maintained, clean, and easy to navigate, making it suitable for families, history enthusiasts, and tourists alike.

I also appreciated the peaceful and inspiring atmosphere, which allows you to spend quality time exploring without feeling rushed. It’s a perfect place to understand how Galle and Sri Lanka played a significant role in maritime history over the centuries.

Overall, I would highly recommend the National Maritime Museum in Galle to anyone visiting the city. It’s an enriching experience that combines history, culture, and education beautifully. I left with a greater appreciation for Sri Lanka’s maritime heritage and many...

PIPPIN AND I WENT TO GALLE! Galle is a 15-minute drive from Unawatuna and can be a fun little half-day trip! Pippin and I drove to Galle one sunny afternoon, and I found a shaded little spot to park in in the fort area. Galle is really lovely to walk around. There’s plenty of history and heritage to be explored and you’ll see so much from the fortified town’s Dutch past come to life before you. Some things you can do in Galle - 1. See the Galle Lighthouse 2. Visit the Dutch Reformed Church 3. And the Maritime Museum 4. Walk along the fort’s ramparts 5. Visit Lighthouse Street 6. Sit at the ramparts and watch the sunset 🌅 It’s a tiny area and there are plenty of shops selling crafts and gems, although these might be priced slightly on the higher side. Worth taking a look at, though! Sri Lanka is very famous for its gems 😊 Hot tip: EVERYTHING is tourist prices here in Galle, so be prepared to spend more on food and drinks if you’re dining here. That said, there are plenty of trendy spots to grab a drink or eat something local or global. Galle definitely has a vibe! 👗: @okhai_org , and I felt DAMN pretty in it!! Got me a whole bunch of compliments too, this did 😁 #galle #srilankadaily #visitsrilanka #explorepage #trendingaudio #trendingreel #travelreels #explorepagereels

Maritime Museum is the only museum which aware the public on marine biological and anthropological aspects of Southern coastal area. It is located in the old Dutch ware house of the fort of Galle, built in 1671. The museum was open to the public on 9th May 1992. Aftermath of Tsunami on 26th December 2004, the museum was completely destroyed and all the expositions were damaged. Under Sri Lanka – Netherlands Cultural Co-operation Program, the Royal Government of Netherlands provided financial assistance for reconstruction of the Maritime Museum. After 3 years period of reconstruction, now the Maritime Museum has opened to the public. The first gallery depicts the types of watercrafts used in passenger transport and maritime trading in Southern Sri Lanka. The traditional life style of fishing communities and such fishing techniques are displayed with attractive models and replicas. The second Gallery is focused on marine eco systems and their flora and fauna. Models of mangroves, sea shore plants, turtles, sea birds and marine mammals are displayed with their taxonomic details. Specimens of corals, marine shells and some invertebrates can be observed in the exhibition while a large skeleton of a Whale mounted in the roof giving you a wonderful experience. The Maritime Museum is serving as a centre of education for various groups of visitors and researchers of Southern region.
