Such an amazing location to explore the galle fort BUT the rooms are too old and outdated for the price they are charging. Definitely NOT a 5 star property in my opinion, more like a 3 to 4 star.
The positives. *Location *guest relations lady was so sweet and amazing. *loved the bar, the cocktails and the street side seating area to just relax and people watch. And loved the bar staff and team. *fab bathroom and layout and a great shower with hot water and nice toiletries.
The negatives. *the room really needs a makeover. I understand its a listed building but that doesn't mean you can't change the rugs and certain furniture. The floor has marks all over, the carpet had a huge hole, the bed is really short and I'm only 5ft 3 so I can't imagine it would be comfortable for a taller person. *the spiral staircase means you need to go up and down for your belongings. we had such a funky horrible smell in the room (I have a feeling it's the cleaning polish/product) surely they can keep a room spray or diffuser in the rooms?! I spent as much time outside the room as physically possible as the overwhelming smell made me feel sick. the whole room is creaky so all day and night you will hear floor boards and doors from above and next door. After a long day of walking in the heat all you want to do is sleep well but that unfortunately didn't happen. There was also building work going on the time we were there which was quite noisy first thing in the morning. The breakfast was average nothing special. I found stains on a towel which was not nice. the general manager didn't make to much of an impression in terms of fixing any issues.
I definitely would NOT return or recommend staying here unfortunately. In fact I believe staying outside the Fort is a much better idea for a higher...
Read moreThis property is architecturally brilliant. It's a wonderful and thoughtful conversion of a historic building into comfortable hotel rooms. But the hotel service is quite poor. I think it's a government-run hotel and it shows. Many of the staff are not well-trained, and do not seem to have much of a hospitality background. As one example, I sat down for breakfast, ordered quickly, and immediately explained that we needed to catch a flight, so we were in the rush. We didn't get our main food after 35-40 minutes of waiting. And it wasn't just me asking: all the staff could clearly observe that I rushed to get my suitcases down AFTER ordering food. But it did not seem to matter to them. I explained to both front desk staff and restaurant staff that we were risking missing our flight, and that they could just give us everything in a takeaway box. They first agreed, but then came out and said that it would take another 15 minutes to get ready. So we just left not eating the breakfast we had paid for. The staff explained that because there was one other table (who sat down after us), they were overwhelmed. Two tables (6 people total) somehow overwhelmed their cooking capacity.
The check-in process at this hotel was quite good. The service quality here is such that if you are paying around US$100-$120, this is a fine hotel. If you are going above that, then Galle offers other better-run hotels in the US$200 range that are located within the same...
Read moreWhen we stayed at this charming hotel way back in 2006 it had a raffish bohemian air that was most attractive. These days everything is far more tidy but not the less attractive for that. The rooms - we were in a grand apartment upstairs - are simply exquisite; wonderful antique furniture, terrific bathrooms, immaculately kept with top quality bed linen and towels. Utterly superb. The breakfast was fine, though on our first morning of our stay there was some confusion over what we were could and could not order.|If I have one less that perfect aspect to comment upon, it is the pool area. The two large frangipani trees that rise up above the pool are badly, very badly, infected with thrip or white fly. The leaves drop into the pool and the water is covered in a scum of white fly detritus, as well as dry rough leaves. The water does not look clean and inviting. Another negative is the mystifying decision to surround the pool with a path of sharp ugly red scoria pieces. The sun loungers are right on top of this pathway. It is impossible to step on, or walk on, this rocky surface in bare feet, without pain. When we were there the lawn area was not mowed, presenting a scruffy appearance. This hotel is so immaculate and elegant in every other area, it seems strange to me that the pool area, so central to the hotel, is not kept just as beautifully as the rest of the...
