Overall, good food but a bit on the expensive side. I recommend coming here for a good lunch deal. For dinner, I'm not so sure.
We tried NamDo restaurant to experience Vietnamese food for the first time in Malmö. Having been to Vietnam, I had something to compare it to.
We visited on a Saturday evening, and since we had booked a table, we didn’t have to wait. The restaurant is larger than it appears from the outside, with charming Vietnamese decor and warm lighting.
For appetizers, we ordered a mixed platter. The highlight was definitely the spring rolls and the fried spring rolls, which were crispy and delicious. I’d recommend sticking to just those.
For the main courses, we ordered pho, which we enjoyed. But was it worth 185 SEK? I’m not sure—that might be subjective. We also got dish #13 with beef and noodles. The best part was the generous portion and the plentiful beef, which had a slightly grainy texture but in a good way. Our third dish was fried rice with egg, chicken, and beef. It was mediocre—nothing special. I'd say, skip that one. However, the food arrived relatively quickly, which was nice.
For drinks, we had the homemade lemonade (65 SEK) and juice (55 SEK), both served in charming jars. The lemonade was way too sweet. So much so that we kept diluting it with water throughout the evening. The juice was just okay.
For dessert, we shared the mango panna cotta, which was surprisingly fresh. It was on the smaller side, especially for 75 SEK, but the flavor was a pleasant surprise.
The service was okay, but it was difficult to get the waitress’s attention from where we were sitting, which made ordering and paying a bit slow.
One downside was the payment process. When the bill came, the card screen prompted for an optional tip, and the waitress's reaction made us feel uncomfortable.
Overall, most of the food was good, but was it worth 1000+ SEK for three people? I don’t think so. For that you could get a nice steak at another restaurant. If they have a good lunch deal, it’s worth trying, but the tipping situation left us with a...
Read moreWhat happened? I had expectations, not super high, but I thought this would be good.
We did not get our main course for 2 hours, and we got 20% off after some minor complaining. So for the waiting alone it should be 1 star.
The outdoor seating area is overall nice. We got maybe the worst park bench kind of thing even though there were other tables available.
We got the starters after maybe 1 hour. We had the big mix starter pack for 4, the vegetarian version. It was really not that good. One of the starters were sweet potato fries, have you heard of that Vietnamese speciality before? Me neither. It was a bit sad to be honest.
All tables around us also waited a long time for the food, so I guess they had some troubles in the kitchen. Probably no real chef this day, or do most people not know what Vietnamese food actually can taste like?
After yet another 1 hour of waiting we were put on some "priority list", and like 15 minutes later we got the mains.
The mains looked good but the taste was really not there at all. The Pho (noodle soup) tasted good at first, but then the huge amount of salt just took over and, thus, the broth clearly had to be avoided.
After the meal I have a tummy ache. Don't know if it's due to this meal but it's nothing I normally have.
Food was 2 stars. Expensive too. I cannot recommend this reataurant even to my worst enemies.
I feel really bad for the waitress that was new on her job....
Read moreCompared to my Vietnamese restaurant experiences from North America (Canada), I have to say my experience at Nam Do was disappointing. It is like this restaurant is getting away with lower standards on several levels.
Sure the decor is great, but the service leaves much to be desired. We literally had to ask to be served or else the staff wasn't paying much attention to us.
My wife had a noodle dish with meat and spring rolls for about 149kr. It was decent and so was the portion. I had a bowl of beef pho for around 129 kr.
Now this is where I'm very disappointed. The size of the pho was equivalent to a child like portion. The noodles were not al dente and I could tell they used cheap noodles. The texture was akin to the noodles found in instant noodle pho packages. The broth was pretty good. However at 129kr I expected a much bigger portion and at least standard quality. I finished this bowl of pho in world record time and scraped the bottom of the bowl hoping for more. In America this portion would be considered the small size, and would cost 45kr, even at higher end spots.
On goes my journey to find a good pho...
