Excellent Food, Great Value, and Fun Location
Located on Djurgården, a park-filled island in Stockholm, Oaxen Slip is a terrific place for lunch or dinner. We went to Oaxen Slip for lunch between visits to a couple of the museums in this lovely part of Stockholm. The restaurant is located in a renovated warehouse, right on the water, so it’s great for strolling and people-watching. Note that the official street address is Beckholmsvägen 26, which shows up on online maps as being on Beckholmbron 26, which is on the island of Beckholmen; however, the restaurant is at the southern edge of Djurgården, on Beckholmsvägen Street, just off Beckholmsbron, right before the bridge over the water. Just look for a large, dark yellow warehouse with “Oaxen” in large letters on the side. If you’d crossed the bridge over the water, you’ve gone too far. Note that both Oaxen Slip (a casual dining spot) and Oaxen Krog (an upscale dining restaurant) are both in the same building.
On weekdays, Oaxen has a three-course prix fixe lunch for 145 SEK. While we were tempted by nearly all the offerings on the à la carte menu, we chose the three-course meal, which had one or two choices for the starter course, three choices for the main, and four choices for dessert. The prix fixe menu choices change frequently, so check out the website for the current offerings.
For the main course, my husband had the game meatballs, served with cream sauce, lingonberries, and boiled potatoes. I had deep-fried haddock, served with remoulade sauce and boiled potatoes. There was also a vegetarian dish available.
For dessert, I chose the chocolate praline, which was one piece of melt-in-your-mouth delicious candy, which was, for me, just the right “small ending” for a delightful lunch. My husband had the chocolate brownie with salted caramel sauce and hazelnuts, which he raved about.
We also had their homemade sparking ginger beverage, with gin (you can have the drink with or without alcohol). Delicious!
With its excellent food, friendly service, and fascinating location, Oaxen Slip was the perfect place for lunch during our day at a couple of the museums...
Read moreSo, I really don’t like to write reviews about places and base that review mostly on the service because a place can have fantastic food anyway. And perhaps the waiter(s) simply are having a bad day. We all do. However. After trying it out twice and receiving just horrendous service and clearly discriminating us because we did not have suits on or look like the cheesy stockbroker types they seem more interested in serving I just can’t find anything to redeem this place anymore. What a joke. We paid for a couple bottles of wine and almost all the small bites on the menu but no one, not one server would come out to the terrace and ask us if we wanted to order, refill water or pour more wine, or just ask if everything tasted ok etc. This happened the next time as well and this time we were told there was no space available even though we just wanted to sit at the bar and there were plenty of seats there. We prepared to sit outside again but changed our mind and tried for the bar anyway after the grumpy waiter left. No problem sitting there as most patrons left shortly after. Another 15 mins and being completely ignored by the bartender we decided to call it quits and spend our money elsewhere. I honestly don’t know what their problem is but if they think that people that come in dressed casually are all broke or something they are sorely mistaken. Spend your 4000 Sek somewhere else where they treat you...
Read moreThis was easily one of my favorite dining experiences while on a (too-short) 6-day trip to Stockholm. I'd come across multiple articles recommending Oaxen Slip, so it was on my shortlist of must-trys. Although I couldn't get a reservation due to its popularity, I happened to be in Djurgården one rainy evening and decided to take a chance as a walk-in. Luckily they had a seat at the bar, and I spent the next 2 hours enjoying amazing food and hospitality from the warm, welcoming staff. The bartender was friendly, attentive, and made great recommendations on what to order. Even fellow diners added to the pleasant atmosphere! Seated at the bar was a local (turned out to be Max, a founder of the popular Ocean Bus sightseeing tours in the city); we had a great conversation, and he was kind enough to introduce me to one of the owners of Oaxen Slip (Agneta), who shared fascinating details about the restaurant and its impressive design/decor. Tack så mycket for an overall wonderful experience at Oaxen Slip! I look forward to returning on my next trip...
