First off, the location is awesome. It's right at the bank of the river running through town right next to the willows growing there, so the view is really pretty. The locale is in a part of Gillbergska gården, a building finished in the 1690's. You go down the stairs into the basement with its arched ceiling made of whitewashed brick and mortar into an incredibly cozy dining establishment. The ceilings are low by today's standard, but it just adds to the feeling of dining in a historic building. Walking through the dining area, past the bar, you come out to the deck where the outdoor serving area is. You can choose between tables next to the building with benches up against the wall filled with pillows and comfy, almost armchairs, or more traditional dining furniture next to the railing overlooking the river, the old bridge and the rest of Gillbergska gården (now a museum).
There, now that I've blathered on about the building and view, on to the important stuff: How was the food?
We ordered a selection of mezedes, small Greek dishes for sharing, from filo-dough pastries filled with feta cheese and nuts drizzled with honey, fried halloumi, dolmades, calamari, octopus, garlic bread with tomato, and spicy sausages. Even though we came at a busy time, the wait for our food was pretty short. The food itself was very good. The pastry was crispy and flaky and the cheese, honey and nuts combination was great. Both the octopus and calamari was tasty and tender, which isn't always the case. The octopus in particular was surprisingly tender. The sausage was hearty with just enough spice to make you feel it.
The meal was rounded with cremé caramel, Greek coffee and Metaxa
The service was excellent, with an attentive, efficient and polite staff
All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable experience and I can heartily recommend this restaurant for anyone...
Read moreEvery year I come back to the same restaurant because of its outdoor sitting area. The starters (fried calamari) were below average. It felt like chewing on a plastic. On the contrary, the main dishes were pretty good (a mixed grill plate and a vegetarian dish). This place has an immense potential but the attitude of the staff needs to change. Some of them are really nice and service minded. Others, namely Mr. muscle guy, need a lot of improvement. You can't pressure customers into ordering when they are not ready, you can't take away dishes when customers are still eating, and there is a minimum on how a staff member should be presentable. Attitude is king in the this business, in this part of the world. With good attitude the customer may come back to give it another chance. When you're rude to them, they don't come back. I know we won't, no matter how great...
Read moreWent here with my girlfriend and she loved it as well. Not noisy and few people so you could have a conversation without bothering you or intruding. The staff is very good and kind. I came during the autumn so it was very nice to come into a good arm welcoming place like this and be reminded of the warm Greece! The menu was good and I think the pricing was decent. Everything about it was good and I would recommend it to everyone in Uppsala it's near the church so if you are visiting that one you can go here before or after. Really good!! The place is a little bit hidden so for me it was a little bit intimidating goring in but when inside it is very pleasant and welcoming. I will definitely go baie when visiting the great church...
