This review is about the restaurant in Laufen castle. Four of us ate there today. Three of us ordered the Vespers snack platter, as well as the white wine soup. The soup was excellent, whereas the snack platter was truly awful. The snack platter comes with a small disk of soft cheese, 4 gurkens, a piece of bacon and one sausage. The bacon and sausage were so tough as to be literally inedible, and to avoid the embarrassment of wrestling with the meat pieces in the elegant restaurant, we brought most of it home. Although honestly we do not intend to eat them, as we fear breaking our teeth. The meats were dry with the texture of shoe leather- and I’m not exaggerating. At 17 CHF per plate, the snack platters were a total waste of money.

Everything in the restaurant is expensive (a bowl of soup is 11 CHF and the Wiener schnitzel is 32 CHF, for example.). One person in our party had the Wiener schnitzel, and enjoyed it very much- it was a generous portion.

I have included a foto of the leftover meat to show how little was eaten. Each person got one piece of bacon and one sausage. Out of three servings you can see that 2/3 of the sausage and over half of the bacon went untouched. Very disappointing.

Also the restaurant does not offer views of the rheinfall, so do not plan to eat there with the idea of enjoying a spectacular view while dining, because that...

You need to go thru Schloss Laufen, which is the castle perched over the falls. At the end of the car park is the ticket office, entry is 5chf, there is also a souvenir shop for Rhein falls and a cafe. Enter thru the castle walls pass the entrance of the castle, to the courtyard at the back, the entrance if you want to walk is straight ahead to the right, or you can take the elevator, to the late at the courtyard down to the falls, good for the elderly, wheelchairs and strollers. The elevator has glass and you get a very nice view. You will need your ticket at both entrances as the barcode gives you entry at the turnstiles. Then make your way to one of the viewing areas, the cantilevered platform over the falls is amazing, suspended in mid air. Or find the entrance to the cave which is a little further along, careful your Head at the entrance, down some stairs and you come to a covered balcony, just to the side of the falls. It is a sight and an experience to be just feet away from this rushing, constant force of water, truly amazing, you will be in awe. On a good day there is a boat service that takes you to the mount in the middle of the falls. One of the most enjoyable...

I went to the waterfall to visit and saw the castle since I didn't knew anything about Schaffausen and heard a lot about the waterfalls ,but since I love history I could not go back without visiting the castle ,and it's gorgeous ! For what I read this castle has been in this hill for more than a 1000 years ! It now functions as museum and restaurant ,you can reach it by car or by boat ,the only thing I didn't like was the fact that the museum felt very empty with just some furniture ,it didn't feel natural ,there are sound rooms and some walkways explaining the history . On the outside if you want to visit some points of the path or get closer to the waterfall ...you have to pay a absurde amount of money just to reach a part where you get very close to the waterfall . Acsess for wheelchairs and other disabilities is very easy ,anyone can visit the outside part of the castle ,inside there are stairs and I didn't see a lift . There is a very large parking space ,from there you can visit the castle ,and descend down to the river and get on a boat ! It's not free you have to pay . Since it's not public transport any swiss SBB cards don't function with boat transport . Overall a great experience !
