Shi’s Fresh Meat Tangyuan – A Taipei Classic with Michelin Bib Gourmand Warmth

Founded in 1964, Shi’s Fresh Meat Tangyuan has been delighting diners for over six decades. It’s more than just a local favorite—it’s a must-visit for travelers seeking authentic Taiwanese flavors. Thanks to its signature savory meat-filled tangyuan, Shi’s has earned the Michelin Bib Gourmand distinction for consecutive years, becoming a proud representative of Taiwan in the international dining scene.

The Cultural Roots of Tangyuan In Chinese culture, tangyuan symbolizes unity and completeness, traditionally enjoyed during festivals like the Lantern Festival and Winter Solstice. Shi’s breaks seasonal boundaries, offering this comforting treat year-round. Unlike the sweet dessert version, their tangyuan is savory, with soft, chewy glutinous rice skins encasing juicy pork, served in steaming hot broth—both deeply traditional and uniquely Taiwanese.

Signature Dish: Fresh Meat Tangyuan Shi’s uses pure glutinous rice for the skin—no added starch—giving it a tender yet chewy texture. The filling features premium Taiwanese black pork, slow-sautéed to release its aroma, then seasoned to perfection. Bite into one and the savory juices burst out, a flavor experience that keeps loyal customers coming back.

Other Must-Try Dishes

Mushroom Pork Rice – Fragrant braised mushrooms and pork over perfectly cooked rice, simple yet satisfying. Sesame Noodles – Springy noodles coated in rich, nutty sesame sauce, a Taiwanese comfort food classic. Buddha Jumps Over the Wall – A luxurious, slow-simmered soup made with premium ingredients, warming both body and soul.

Local Spirit, Global Recognition The Michelin Bib Gourmand award recognizes not just Shi’s craftsmanship, but its value, flavor, and cultural significance. There’s no elaborate plating here—just time-honored skill and a taste of history, each bowl offering a journey through Taiwan’s culinary heritage.

📍 Address: No. 73, Section 2, Guiyang Street, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City ⏰ Hours: 10:00–21:00...

Fantastic and highly recommended restaurant you should check it out

It didn’t come to my mind to take many photos because I was too busy finishing my meal. The restaurant is Hakka style and provides a variety of dishes. We ordered Tangyuan (Glutinous Rice Balls) which I’ve never expect served with noodle soup. The stuffing made of grounded pork, dried scallion, dried small shrimps, etc. And the skin of rice ball is very thin and I must say it’s a perfect combination. We also order dumpling soup, nevertheless, it taste very good. Steamed sandwich (Kuah-pau) was one dish I like. The ingredients contain a chunk of stew pork which is very tender and it’s not too lean or fat with a good balance, comes with peanut power, icing sugar, and cilantro to add a little flavors. The price is cheerful! Yee-haw… Tangyuan noodle soup – $1.7 USD Dumpling soup – $1.2 USD Steamed Sandwich – $1.4 USD House Noodle (no...

I was absolutely blown away by this incredible restaurant! The meat rice ball was excellent, perfectly complemented by a vibrant, flavorful soup. It was my first experience with such unique cuisine. The menu boasted a lineup of signature dishes that were equally mouthwatering, including the Buddha jump wall, signature noodles, spicy wontons, and the wine-soaked chicken drumsticks. The latter was the most delicious wine-soaked chicken on this Taipei trip.

The only challenge was that the order sheet was in Chinese, but thankfully, a kind staff member helped me write it.

I can't wait for my next visit to dive into even more...
