城裡的小月光 自強店 — Restaurant in Kaohsiung

Found this on our second night of Kaohsiung. It was a 5 minute walk from our hotel. Our eating times are still off since have we just landed in Taiwan not too long ago, so we were glad to find a place that opened late. We came in around 10:30pm and the server gave us an English menu. It’s a very warm and inviting interior to me. It wasn’t crowded which made it comfortable for us. You can sit on one of two sides. You face the counter on one side and on the other, you’re facing a wall that has the story of how this restaurant came to be. In big font, it said “Mom’s Flavor”.

Our order was the 899NTD combo which came with your choice of soup, chicken dish, appetizer, rice or handmade noodle, drink and dessert. It also came with cold tofu, Japanese style cod liver, and an abalone salad with this amazing crispy cracker.

My boyfriend and I exchanged looks of awe and simultaneous quiet “mmmms” for each dish we ate and the soup we drank. We aren’t Taiwanese but the flavors definitely reminded us of a cozy and warm home cooked meal. Like we were being fed and taken care of by a parent’s loving cooking. The soup was so clear tasting, as in not too salty and didn’t leave some kind of artificial aftertaste on your tastebuds. I know it’s only day 2, but this has become the favorite meal we have had so far. I told my boyfriend that I’m going to be sad once we leave the restaurant because we won’t be able to get this again at home. Am grateful to experience this.
