Handelaars — Restaurant in Kaohsiung

One of the best experiences I’ve had at a restaurant, from an American perspective. Not sure how I stumbled into this tiny place, but I was coming down from the Kaohsiung lighthouse and walking back to downtown Cijin when I saw this place and checked it out on google. Having 4.9 stars with over 100 reviews, I decided to check it out. Inside, I dined alone while they prepared dishes in front of you, the owner explaining Taiwanese history to you dish by dish. The food was both surprisingly amazing and creative, while the service was both interactive and made you feel comfortable. Again not sure how I stumbled into this place, but 100% would recommend. We just happened to stumble across this restaurant and it happened to be a pleasant meal.

The concept is fine dining and the dishes imitate fine dining but it’s not really. The different dishes were still delicious by their own merit.

In order of course, we got: mango salsa on corn chip, pumpkin soup, salad, seared chicken with mushroom and risotto. Our personal favourites were the pumpkin soup (creamy and warming) and the chicken (juicy, well-cooked and the sauce it came with was pretty tasty).

The owner would come and explain the produce used in each dish and the concept behind the dish.

Restaurant is family owned, with the wife and owner’s two kids helping out as well.

As you can see in the picture, the main dish came out undercooked and almost ruined the trip
