I live on the east coast of the US, previously lived in upstate NY and frequented NYC. I think I know pretty well what a good New York slice should be. I visited my sister who had lived here for at least a decade, and she suggested we have pizza for dinner. My first reaction internally was: oh no, this may be bad. Because sometimes, when you try to have a food you enjoy in a place that does not specialize in that food, you are just setting yourself up for disappointment. That was fortunately not the case here.
We arrived in a heavy downpour, but no worries: we can risk it all for pizza. 😂
She ordered half of two pizzas on offer: The Brooklyn and The Free Bird. The pizza survived the wet walk and dry ride to her place: mission mostly accomplished. But would the pizza be good? It was warm still, and we dived in.
Um.... Someone has spent time in NYC because the Brooklyn is extremely close to a classic NY style slice. Good fold. Good flop. Ingredients safely ancorhed to the pie, and no awkward slide. The crust was delicious, and I'm not a big crust person, but it could have been a few millimeters thinner. Maybe a bit more sauce, literally almost there. The Brooklyn tasted of yummy cheese and what appeared to be and tasted of basil. In short, it was good as hell. I ate a whole slice easily.
However: as much as I was kind of excited as someone originally from the southern US to try this what I presume to be the namesake of the song that gives a legendary guitar solo (which yes, we did play as we tried a slice), this slice was a bit of a fail. It had lemon on it, which initially shocked my soul, but also shockingly I liked the lemon? And when I return stateside I may have to try this on homemade pizza. But the chicken is what killed it: it tasted dry, almost frozen, and my sister hit the nail on the head: chicken salad texture. On pizza? It's a no for me. The crust was great though. We did not finish our Free Bird slices. I hope the proprietors rethink this one. You're really on to something with the lovely tasting lemon slices. But maybe use a different chicken, season it better, use less chicken... Or sub something else. Like mushroom and olive may complement the lemon. Also is it cilantro on the slice? Whatever it is, probably don't add that.
Brooklyn: 9/9.5 of 10 - it's a bit disorienting finding pizza this close ito Nay slice in Taipei Free Bird: 2/3 of 10
Service was excellent. The person waiting on us was direct and friendly. We're they going for a somewhat NY vibe? Idk, maybe. It worked for us, and me being an East Coaster.10/10
Ambiance was top tier. It felt like a nice place to have a slice and a drink with a friend. Maybe as part of a fun night. Maybe a quick lunch. 10/10
Location and name: iconic. More places should give extremely basic names to their restaurants. Practical, but also cool. I'd also like to point out I'd rather eat pizza under a bridge than in some fancy schmancy mall. More real: some of the best pizza is from a hole in...
Read moreI always believe simplicity is best, and this place represents that.
Payment: CASH only and each slice is around $90-$160NTD. For me, $400 was enough for two slices and a soft drink.
Pizza: Good quality New York style thin crust pizza. They have four flavors; one of them is the classic cheese called Brooklyn that’s a MUST have. Their bread is crispy on the bottom with a chewy finish. 3/4 of the flavors have meat on it (pepperoni, sausage, or bacon). If you don’t like Parmesan flakes on it you have to tell them ahead of time since they are generous with it before serving.
Extras: they have a clear pork and veggie soup that tastes quite hardy and healthy.
Drinks: nama beer (beer on tap), kombucha (digestive drink), and soft drink soda.
Facility: the place is quite narrow and having six people sitting together will already fill half of the place. Not stroller friendly and they only have bar stools, so if you crave for pizza and you have kids, get ready to take-out. They have one bathroom stall, but no dry paper towel so make sure to bring a hanky.
Transportation: There’s a parking lot under the highway with a Ubike 2.0 stand, and a...
Read moreI had high hopes for this pizza place because it looked like New York style pizza. The first bite was comforting because the dough is fantastic. It's crunchy on the bottom and soft on top. I wish I could stop my review there. I had the Brooklyn slice which is a cheese pizza with mozzarella, parmigiano reggiano, and fresh basil. There was not enough sauce on the pizza. I lifted up the cheese and it was pink beneath. And it was way too salty! They need to offer free water because the non-alcoholic drinks are only 200 ml. The location is not close to an MRT station but it's across the street from Syntrend Shopping center and one block away from the Don Don Donki Zhongxiao Xinsheng Store. They have 3 other flavors that you can try one with meatballs, one with pepperoni, and one with bacon. The restaurant is quite popular on a Saturday night and with limited seating, it...
