Kings Restaurant, Zanzibar — Restaurant in Unguja

Went here based on a few decent reviews and overall good review rating. We were the only customers in there and saw another couple come and then shortly leave after being seated. The fish curry I had was overcooked and disappointing. When paying the bill, the presumably owner said that the eftpos machine wasn't working. He turned it on and then conveniently told me he couldn't access the pin and phone number to fully connect for the transaction and I was forced to pay in cash. Other people noted in reviews that they had decent portion sizes but the chicken stir fry was a measly small portion. I initially ordered a beef curry to be told that they had no beef. Took 30 minutes after ordering to receive a banana shake despite there being no other customers. Wouldn't bother...

We were looking for a non-touristy affordable place to eat and found this. Such simple but delicious food - i got the chicken biryani with a side of tuna and was pleasantly surprised. Tuna was delicious and crunchy was a bit dry for our own taste (but that’s how the locals like it. we’re locals but not from here) so next time we’ll ask for it to be grilled or not too dry. The ugali and octopus curry was alright - the star was the biryani that was really light to eat since the curry was some kind of coconut curry (not overly tomato-ey or spiced. It’s not the typical red Zanzibari biryani sauce).

Licked my fingers and my husband said we’d come back the next day :) worth a try. It’s a liiiitle bit stuffy inside but they have fans. You won’t notice it...

I don't understand where all the positive reviews come from. Our experience was far from satisfying, and the food served had little to do with what was described on the menu.

We ordered seafood dishes, expecting a rich selection including shrimp, calamari, octopus, and fish – just what you would expect in a proper seafood platter. The staff assured us they had all these ingredients, but instead, we received only pieces of fish, which was a huge disappointment. Seriously, there were just pieces of fish on the plate. Nothing else. The “seafood pasta” was no better, turning out to be a regular pasta with a mediocre sauce and a few bits of fish.
