I’m currently sitting at the cafe for my 6th day in a row. I had to write this review fresh off a meal so I can passionately state how wonderful this place is.
My biggest complaint since being in Thailand has been that I hadn’t yet found a restaurant that blew me away.
Cat House has done just that. Every single dish here has been full of flavor, FRESH flavor!! Very subtle but overwhelmingly pleasant.
Best of all, each dish has its own identity. Unlike other restaurants that play with similar ingredients, the palates here don’t cross over.
Each dish tastes HOMEMADE, with care and the best part, over multiple days of ordering the same dish, they are CONSISTENT.
In 6 years of full time travel, I have never “made my way through a menu” until now.
The staff accommodates each request I have, making things gluten free for me, making a sugar free mojito. Making sugar free coffees and smoothies. No questions asked.
My favorites: the garlic hummus. (If you don’t like garlic, don’t get this. It’s pungent. If you do, it’s a wonderland! 😍 The homemade kombucha: it’s bitter in the best way. You really get the natural flavors (and can see it at the bottom) not that sugary western mess The smoothies- passionfruit coconut (don’t worry if you’re not a coconut lover, you barely taste it. Again, it’s not very sweet. It just tastes fresh.
The tostada- if you’re gf, they make it with a chickpea flour tortilla. It’s Heaven!!
They serve big portions! Free Wi-Fi! English speaking and attentive staff, nice peaceful area with view of Chedi gate. No a/c but It’s small and there’s a fan circulating the inside. My only wish is that they provide almond milk for people who don’t want the gluten of oat or fat from coconut.
I sat at the front tables every day, sorry for the lost souls who wandered by completely oblivious to the gem of this place. And sorry for myself who passed the first day to go to a cafe that was twice the price and half as satisfying.
There should really be a sign that says, “BEST TRAVELERS CAFE. full stop.”
It’s no wonder it has a cult following. They should hold cooking classes!! I’d...
Read moreLocated in one of the small lanes off the main road surrounding the old city, it is just at at slight bend along the lane full of hostels. Was quite quiet while I was there, but it seemed to be getting busier as I left.
The menu is quite substantial considering that it uses seasonal ingredients, and they stay true to "making your dish upon order" instead of scooping it out of a big communal pot.
They carry Cha Ma Ma's range of Kombucha, which was quite refreshing.
Had the Red Curry with pork (you can choose chicken or tofu instead of pork too), which was served with red and brown (if i recall right) rice, and a simple salad with a really nice dressing. Portion was perfect for one. Curry was flavourful and had lots of eggplant in it. Rice was cooked perfectly, not too sticky and starchy, yet not too dry. The salad just balanced everything and lightened the whole dish up.
Also ordered a mixed plate of their pumpkin and eggplant fries. The pumpkin still held their odd shapes and the vegetables were cut just thin enough to give a nice bite, yet be perfectly cooked through when the batter was fried. Both types of fries were lovely and soft in the middle, and crispy on the outside. Served with a sauce which tasted a little like caesar dressing. Honestly didn't need the dip.
The brownie was really lovely. It had a really thin crispy crust which was easily broken through with a spoon that cuts into a nice soft centre, which is not too dense, yet sticky enough to adhere a little to the spoon. Served warmed with a few slices of banana, which was really unnecessary. Had the brownie with a lovely cup of their lemongrass tea. Saw them making it in a pot and it was served in a really cool cup.
Overall great dining experience. Obviously more expensive than your average street food, but this is of a...
Read moreWent here after reading reviews, had a slightly odd experience. The food was tasty but staff not so welcoming or helpful. When we arrived struggled to find a seat, we asked to sit at the end bench table outside by the plants which looked nice but just had a dish cloth left on it (no problem for us). Instead we were ushered to corner table around the side which felt very small, squished and kind of IN the plants. We sat down but after a few minutes decided to move ourselves inside to nicer seat at the table by the front which was now empty. After browsing the menu, I decided upon the vegetarian curry burrito w/ avocado, which is what I had read about previously. Don’t get me wrong, the food was delicious and definitely inspired me to play around with the idea and cook up something similar at home. But the waitress was so slow and didn’t seem to cope well with the busy environment.... She kept getting the tables orders mixed up, bringing us other people’s food and drinks, sending our food and drinks to various other tables. It was a bit strange, but I don’t know her situation. It kind of spoilt our experience though as we had to keep trying to resolve the food/drink mix ups, rather than enjoy our experience at the cafe. Nevertheless, the WiFi worked well and the cost of the meal was okay for the quality and taste (฿125). Unless craving this particular meal, I’m not sure if I would return though as options across Chiang Mai are...
