As a Chinese person the food here really impressed me or either that I had low expectations. Jokes aside I can see why this Restuarant recieved is Michelin star. Ordered the crab roll, crab fried rice, steamed fished, salted egg sotong (squid), and salted fried pork. I have to say that I really enjoyed all of them as they were all tasty and flavourful. The squid is quite unique as usually in my country (Singapore) and Malaysia they will always fry the squid with salted egg batter which taste nice for the first few bites but after awhile it feels too rich. Well over here they cooked in a different wheel by making a salted egg sauce and pouring it over the squid which I find is much better. The only thing I didn’t really like is the service. It isn’t bad by any means but there really are many improvements they can make to it. Example: serving the dish at the side of the table when there is space in the middle. I understand that it is during the peak hour period and they need to get things done quickly, but it really doesn’t take much effort to just place the food in the middle. Other than that their customer service is quite decent. Overall I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who is looking to try out Chinese food. ( sorry for the lack of photos as I have forgotten to take pictures of the rest of the food as I...
Read moreHighly overrated Chinese restaurant. Jiatong Heng has a long history in Chiang Mai and probably used to be good in a distant past, but now rests on its laurels without really being good. I've been in both the original branch near the Nightbazar and in the new branch in One Nimman. In the original branch, the quality varies, sometimes even the rice is old or too hard, and nobody seems to notice. I tried a Peking Duck which was below standard and when I wanted to give feedback to the owner, he simply said: we are very famous. In other words: it's your problem! Ordering from the One Nimman branch, there are also always some disappointments: the fish and crab are often deep-fried, even in soups and curries, which really spoils the taste. Summarized, with Jiatong Heng there is always some disappointment.
With several other, especially smaller Chinese restaurants in Chiang Mai doing a much much better job, I'd recommend to forget about the name and old fame of Jiatong Heng and find the real jewels in Chinese cuisine in Chiang Mai: Yangtze Jiang, Hualin and a few others.
[pictures: crab curry with only deep-fried skin, hardly any meat and smell, if the chef would have steamed or shallow-fried it, it would have been so...

Staffs are friendly and helpful. Below are the reviews of the food I had.
The crab fritter (虾枣, very very nice. Stuffed with full of crab meat, unlike that lousy chin lee and other teochew restaurant in Sg. Price is affordable too
The 水煎包, I think can give a miss. Skin is thick despite the fillings are flavourful.
The stew duck - that's good and flavourful. I thought without any sambal chilli, it will taste bland. But I was wrong. Meat is tender and skin is sweet and together with the vinegar sauce, superb. A small little surprise - bottom of the duck has greeny crunchy kailan! What a good match
The fish maw is also another must have for that kinda price , so affordable and can be shared between 2 pax. Full of fish maw, unlike SG taste horrible and expensive and little fish maw
The orh nee , pls.... So good at only $80baht!!!! Bottom of orh nee has sticky rice,...
