Last weekend, I had the pleasure of visiting Seoul Restaurant in Chiang Mai for lunch. As part of my market research for potentially opening a Korean restaurant in Chiang Mai, I selected this highly-rated establishment, boasting an impressive 4.9 rating on Google, to get a sense of the local dining trends, especially among the younger demographic near Chiang Mai University.
Despite its slightly hidden location off the main road and the somewhat imprecise directions from Google Maps, which required me to wander around a bit after parking, the effort was well worth it. The restaurant itself is modest in size, with around 6-7 tables, and I was the only customer during my visit.
The menu was quite intriguing, offering a variety of dishes that seemed popular among Thai youth. I decided to try the Soybean Noodle Soup (Kongguksu) and Spicy Pork Kimbap, curious to see how well they would be executed. After a short wait of about 10 minutes, my food arrived.
Although I'm not usually a fan of Soybean Noodle Soup, I ordered it because of its complexity and potential difficulty in preparation. To my delight, the noodles were perfectly chewy, and the soybean soup was rich, flavorful, and seasoned to perfection. The Spicy Pork Kimbap was equally impressive, with rice cooked to perfection and an incredible texture and taste. I was so impressed that I asked the staff whether the chef was Korean or Thai.
Having worked as a chef for many years and visited many Korean restaurants across 38 countries, I've often encountered dishes that were poorly imitated or overly localized. However, Seoul Restaurant stands out for its authenticity and high-quality preparation. Based on the excellence of the two dishes I tried, I have no doubt that the rest of their menu is equally outstanding.
I'm thrilled to have discovered this hidden gem of a Korean restaurant in Chiang Mai and will certainly recommend it to my in-laws living in the area. It's a must-visit for anyone seeking a delightful Korean meal...
Read moreWent to this restaurant with high expectations due to the reviews, however was disappointed with the jajangmyeon which had very little ingredients that cost 189baht, very overpriced. The music was blasting super loud rap music, which made it super unbearable to eat in peace. And they didn’t give the usual few side dishes that Korean restaurants always provide, only 2. For this high price point and mediocre quality, I don’t recommend to come here. You can find better quality at better...
