Serene Backyard Cafe & Eatery — Restaurant in Chiang Mai Province

One of the most affordable waterfront cafes in Chiang Mai. Backyard rarely gets big tourist crowds and is on a nice walking path that hugs the river. The staff is very friendly and attentive.

The bad: I’ve seen a couple locals peeing across the way on the stepped riverbank on more than one occasion. There’s also a pack of terriers (yes, like the dog breed) that roams the walking path in front of the cafe next to the river. They’re cute at first but they can actually be a bit aggressive to passers by. Lastly, the Khao Soi here has too much yellow curry powder in my opinion.

Even with these things in mind though, I definitely find myself coming back to Backyard somewhat frequently. It definitely has charm.

Check out the beanbag chairs if you have time to kill. They’re a fun way to lounge...

I booked on Airbnb for 1,300 THB during high season - very fair price for what you get here. I haven't seen them on any other site than Airbnb.

Right at the river in a lush green garden. Popular night clubs nearby. Small basic Cafe and restaurant with singer on site (closed on Wednesdays). Limited parking available.

It seems they sometimes have bookings for the Cafe / restaurant with private functions, but apparently this ends at midnight - if you insist on going to bed early this might not be the right place. 😉

Serene Backyard was one of the most unique places that I have ever stayed. The shipping containers were in a hidden garden close to a peaceful lake. It is not too far to walk to the night Bazar and into the city. The inside of the shipping container is eco friendly and very cool how it is decorated.
