My first visit to this establishment. Mixed review I'm afraid.
My first experience was uncomfortable. The restaurant Maitre D' asked "How many people?". I replied "I am alone." to which he said nothing though pointed to the other side of the building away from the restaurant proper, before 'dismissing' me with a wave of the back of his hand.
He should look for another job because he is not suited to this one.
Over the 'other side of the building' it was mostly typical Japanese bench style with small stools looking through glass at fresh seafood. It is where, presumably, customers who are alone are 'banished'.
I might and perhaps should have left though decided not to. I wanted to eat.
To be fair my seafood was fresh & very good.
I loved the lobster bisque though the deep dish plate was not clean. Female supervisor insisted on replacing the dish for which I thank her.
Replacement plate was cleaner though not spotless. Shinsen should not have this problem as it has sterilisers on site... perhaps they use them only for glassware?
I enjoyed my glass of white wine though could not order a second glass because " we are not allowed to sell between 2pm & 5pm. I know this is true of Supermarkets in Thailand, though I can buy wine with a meal at anytime at any restaurant, or of course even without food in any pub.
Shinsen should review their acohol licenses, they are no doubt losing potential revenue & profits by not having the right licences, or they can serve alcohol though don't know it.
Last word is for the staff. Apart from the ignorant & arrogant Maitre D', staff wore smiles, gave me a lot of attention & were clearly doing their best. The Supervisor especially did all she could to make my dining experience as good as it could be.
Only for the serving staff do I rate Shinsen 3 Stars. If not for them it would have...
Read moreI was recommended to try this place out by a friend. I found out later he recommended that I try the giant red crabs that are imported, which he failed to tell me earlier. My entire group tried everything but that. We mostly had the sushi and some wagyu steak. Unfortunately the sushi is costly for Bangkok, but the quality does not flow through. I've eaten at many Michelin starred restaurants throughout the world and am based in NYC. I was hoping the sushi quality here would be better or just as good because it was closer to Japan. Unfortunately it's mediocre at best. Even the security guard was saying it's only tourists or out of towners that eat here. Service was ok and but mostly lackluster. The wagyu steak could have been cooked better and came out bland.
All of the food for my entire group came out at different times about 15-20minutes apart amongst 5ppl. Even tho half of us order similar sushi platters. So the first person who got their food first, had finished eating his entire dinner while the last two persons were still waiting on their dinners. The chefs should've been making the sushi and sashimi platter simultaneously, but instead chose to make them one at a time. It was a hot and inefficiently slow mess. Our entire dinner took practically 3hrs. They also add 10% gratuities to the bill.
Upon walking into the institution, it's a hot mess to figure out how anything works, where to sit, and how to order. The bathrooms are large and mostly clean. The food looks better in Instagram photos than its freshness and tastes. This place has so much potential to do better with more organized work, but it is missing proper execution. Overall, it's a solid...
Read moreI came again a year later and was disappointed. The uni was not fresh, the otoro was tough, and the salmon caviar was overly salty. Other items were very good as the first time I came.
This restaurant is a real fish market that supplies other restaurants with seafood. There are several tanks containing live Alaskan King crab, Maine lobster, shrimp, and shellfish. You get to choose the actual animal that they’re going to cook for you and the waitress will photograph you holding your meal. The Alaskan King crabs are unexpectedly large and they make a great photo. It is also a restaurant and sushi bar.
King crab is their specialty and it is delicious. Where I come from (state of Maine USA) king crab is always salted. I could never understand why anyone liked it. This was alive before they steamed it and absolutely delicious crab meat. They serve it with the shells pre-cracked - the lazy man’s crab. Enough for two people.
They made a fried rice out of the crab eggs and served it in the upturned crab shell. It tasted good but was overly salty.
I also had chūtoro and ōtoro tuna sushi. The chūtoro was very fatty but I’ve seen chūtoro with a higher fat content.
The ama ebi was sweet and fresh.
Very expensive, the king crab alone was 7,000 baht. Add a couple of sushi and a drink or two and you will easily spend over 10,000 baht at this restaurant. 5% discount...
