It's unfortunate that Google doesn't have a decimal system and we need to choose between 4 and 5, so anything above 4.5 tends to get rounded up to 5. But no problem for Maison Phillipe- it's a 5.00. Low-key, unpretentious restaurant where the food is the star. Everything we had was simply and beautifully prepared and tasted fantastic. It's rare for me to like (love!) every dish in a meal like this, but the country style foie gras terrine en croute, caesar salad (with JUST the right amount of lightly smoked chicken), the large portion of sea bass with white wine and lemon sauce and the apple tart (tarte fine aux pommes, the one with the beautiful fan of finely sliced apple) were all perfect. The last apple tart I had like this was in Beaune at Le Caveau Des Arches just a few weeks ago and Maison Phillipe's version was at least as good and maybe even a little better. Attention to detail, making everything perfect, is what makes a great restaurant and this place made the grade for me. One taste of the ice cream and I said to my friend, "This is homemade, I'm sure". We asked the waitress and yes, it was homemade. Who does that? Somebody here cares deeply about making food that really tastes good, not just painting pretty pictures on a plate. Wonderful experience in every way. In my opinion, head and shoulders above Cocotte, Love me Tender, and the other good rustic French restaurants in the area. First time for me, but...
Read moreWell lots to write about on Mason Philipe. It’s the small things that all put together add up to five stars. The owner greets the customer and always checks on the meal with attentive concern. The expertly trained Thai staff who with eagle eyes anticipate and respond to the needs of the customer. Really amazing service and kudos to the staff. The complimentary hot bread served with butter (and an actual butter knife), the palate cleanser between starter and main. The wine list- panoramically extensive with rightly so a focus on French wine. The food itself is hearty and rich with notes of Its Burgundy home. I had the goats cheese and puff pastry salad which was delicious but could have done with a little more crunch on the pastry. For mains the pork chop with apples and steamed vegetables and Dijon sauce. Super delicious and made me feel like I was back in a French kitchen. Additional Plus, Surprisingly prices are quite reasonable. A lovely meal and I dined solo, which typically results in poor service. Not here.
I hate giving five stars as it devalues my taste buds. However in this case I had no...
Read moreAfter having a few disappointing experiences trying French food - looking at you Brasserie9, I was mildly sceptical about a newly opened place. However after the first taste of the Gazpacho, my fears melted away. Just like the steak that followed. It was just wonderful. You can see inside the huge kitchen which sadly being the only guest, added some pressure on the chefs. The service is unobtrusive but on point. The atmosphere downstairs is more industrial whilst upstairs is more cozy. I was very lucky to have chef Phillipe drop in and enjoy some time with him. This is his passion project which is reflected in the experience. For me whilst in Thailand, this will be my go to restaurant for French brasserie style food. Can't...
