Decent food, but not there's better food in Tonsai. Prices are slightly lower than other places in Tonsai, and portion sizes are pretty large. Totally sensible to split between two. The bbq chicken is what they're famous for, and it's not bad. Their sanitation practices are virtually non existent.
Time for the story of my experience. We had a pretty decent sized group of people that walked up the hill to Mama's. When we got there, there were 6 or 8 pieces of chicken sitting on top of a smoldering grill, but were mostly untended. Most members of our group ordered the bbq chicken as an appetizer, then ordered more food. We watched the server come over, grab a set of tongs from near the grill, and pull those pieces off the grill. There was one piece left on the grill.
My partner and I each had one small bite of a friend's chicken, because she got two pieces, and ate all of them.
After eating our chicken, we watched the server walk back over to the grill, add more charcoal and stoke the fire, and use those tongs to move the piece of cooked chicken to one side. Then we watched as he pulled the lid off a bucket sitting by the grill that was there when we arrived but hadn't noticed. He used those same tongs to move raw chicken from the bucket to the grill to cook the next batch.
The next day, my partner and I had a little bit of the Tonsai Tummy, but it wasn't too bad. Our friend though, who's chicken we had shared, and who had two pieces, was knocked out of commission for two solid days. However, it is important to note that food poisoning is incredibly difficult to trace, and I can't say with any certainty at all that it came from Mama's chicken. What I can say is that I didn't have any stomach issues before eating there, and didn't have any issues after eating at any of the other...
Read moreComing to Tonsai, we already knew that we want to go to the legendary Mama’s Chicken. With the rain, it was very hard to find the path behind the big puddles. We tried again on a sunny day and it was a jackpot - the portions were big, everything was delicious and the chicken burger was simply worth dying for. I think it was the best burger we’ve ever eaten in our lives (seriously!). In the end, we ordered 2! For 3 dishes and 2 big cocktails we paid 410 THB. Don’t be scared how the surroundings or the place look like - just go and you won’t regret it. I wish we could have gone more times!
TIPS TO GET THERE:
There’s a concrete path straight from the longtail boat dock at the beach. When you’re walking on the beach, walk along the wall between 2 resorts (Tinidee and Tonsai Bay resort). There’s going to be a path on the right side of the Tinidee’s pool. Follow the path along the wall, at some point you’ll have to turn left. This is where you should see a ladder to jump the wall. Once you cross the wall, there are signs leading you to straight to Mama’s Chicken. Pictures for a...
Read moreIt is worth the short walk into the village for this. The resort and cafes along the way have all closed due to covid. They are the only surviving one in this village. I ordered the chicken burger that many talked about. It is 2 thin breaded patties in a burger with a light crisp. It is chicken breast meat but super tender and juicy. They have different sauces and mayo to go with the burger too! Definitely one of the best chicken burgers I have had. Did a time lapse video of the making.
Their papaya salad is also really good. Somehow all the ingredients are soft and absorbed the sauce really well. Very flavourful in each bite.
Ordered their banana shake too. Good balance of milk and fruit. Different those that I have tried.
They also have small takeaway packs like fried chicken sticky rice, banana sticky rice etc that climbers come and buy as take away for the day.
I saw a 70+ year old Caucasian lady with 2 walking sticks to support herself walked in for breakfast. She must be living here for a long while and this is a...
