In terms of location - it is slightly off the usual tourist track or, at the very end of the river walk, but that's about it if you want to complain about something. The moment we went in - we were looked after as very valued guests. Once you have ordered, a complimentary (and very delicious) bread and lard-herb spread was brought in. They have several rooms sizing from a banquet hall to a cozy corner for romantic moments. All of them have a light traditional decor with slightly different vibe in each of them. A special room with huge collection of vodka for customers to try, but in my favourites (despite me not being the fan of vodka in general) are "Hrenovuha" with horse radish and "Malinivka" with raspberries. Those two are A MUST to try! 😄 If you want - they do sell a small sets of vodka infusions in a neat box of 3 to take with you (along side of some other nice treats. N.B. If you have alcohol limit or have a slight digestion discomfort - try "Kvas"- fermented dark bread drink, or "Kefir" - fermented milk drink. Both of them are very good for diversity of your gut bacteria and will have less than 0,1% of alcohol. Totally nonalcoholic alternative, or if you want tasty still soft drink- "Kompot" (typically apple and sultanas flavoured). Borsch is a very tasty traditional Ukrainian beetroot soup you should not miss and in this restaurant is a must (I even forgot to take a picture as dived in straight away). They were running an "Olivier salad festival", so we ordered a selection of 4 versions of it. It was superb! I have eaten this salad countless times, but here every version I tried instantly became my new favourite. "Golubci" a mince meat and rice wrap in a wilted cabbage leafs and "Draniki" grated potatoe pancakes were ordered as a main course. In here they have potatoes fine grated which, believe it or not, do promote a different taste to those if they are grated on coarse grater and were exactly as I like them (texture might not be for everyone though). Portion sizes are not big, but after all that we were well stuffed. Since it was a birthday treat I didn't wanted to leave without a cake but seeing us hesitate our waitress was quick to share one. "Medovik" a layered honey and cream cake was again up there with the best of them and left us both happy that we tried it. A special praise to our waitress, who was full of knowledge and advice towards food, drink and beyond (suggested a place I was not aware of for us to enjoy later). The skill of the waiting staff is to offer and suggest but never impose, as well as being honest, not scared to voice own opinion and our waitress was the best.
It was a birthday treat from me to have a weekend in Kiev and friends organised a birthday card and some money for me to find the perfect place - we found it here! Will we come back? You...
Read moreAmazing place! A classy top restaurant well known amongst locals. Not very known amongst tourists this is a true hidden gem. The local cuisine is fully represented. We had a few different Vareniki for starters. Kiev is lnown for its Salo, a kind of fat distantly resembling bacon, and this dish was a must-have on our table. A tranche of duck liver pate rounded off the starters. They have their own grill and make a fantastic shashlik and beef medaillons. The chicken Kiev is a true miracle! Chicken Kiev is a dish made from chicken minced meat, often styled in cordon-blue type fashion, stuffed with a Dill/Butter mixture. When cooled the mixture melts inside the meat and escapes to form a sauce once the meat is cut. Here they style the chicken to look like a chicken leg/ drumstick. They even add a little chicken bone to make it look like a real chicken leg. The spare ribs are good, but the sauce and flavor is not like the typical US Babyback ribs. A vodka room with over 80(!) individual vodkas is overwhelming and one might leave it to the staff to provide excellent suggestions. Contrary to what you might think, vodka is an excellent accompaniment to the food and does not need to be slammed down in a shot like manner. The restaurant offers a “vodka tree” with a selection of vodkas that can be shared with friends. Absolutely necessary to reserve in weekends. If u dont know what to order, show them...
Read moreFantastic, fine dining with Ukrainian cuisine. Authentic and exquisite!
The venue is very cute -- a boat on the river with all the lights and views. The staff are incredibly professional and quite exceptional. The food was simply wonderful! I ordered a chicken and mushroom roll (similar to a blini) with a mushroom cream sauce. My friend ordered some form of potatoes pancake with Smetana. They literally were transported back to village life and were consuming Smetana by the spoonful! I also ordered "potatoes and bacon on the grill;" I highly recommend. The presentation is wonderful but then it's just so delicious as well -- the potatoes were perfect and the cut of bacon was lovely. Order it was garlic sauce! We also ordered blood sausages (not my choice) but I did try them. I don't love them because I didn't grow up with them but even then they were nice. I could tell they were very very well prepared. My friend loved them. The restaurant also gave us a complimentary pickled vegetable bowl, which is a great experience for foreigners to see how everything can be picked here.
The wine selection was wonderful. Settled for a lovely rosé. The vodka room was impressive even to just walk past. And the bathrooms were in spotless condition. I can't recommend this place enough!! It helps to have a...
