Having taken a recommendation from a local guide book and rung up to book we also requested a table upstairs as it may be quieter. We arrived to find a cramped chip shop packed with noisy people all stood round in waiting for their takeaways. We had to queue up just to say we had booked. They could find no record of the booking. We were TOLD, not ASKED to take a seat and someone would come and take our order. When we emphasised that we had booked a table upstairs they looked at us amazed and asked if that was what we really wanted! We said yes and were then told we would have to wait downstairs anyway until they could take our order. Having placed the order we had to ask, yet again, about going upstairs. We were finally and somewhat reluctantly taken to a rear door and told, go right to the top and pick a table! Up two flights of dimly lit stairs we found a long narrow and dingy looking room, bleak, bare and uninhabited. The food, one haddock and chips and one pie and chips arrive 20 minutes later, mostly cold. I asked if we I could have some gravy for the pie only to be told we don't have any!!!! The fish, I am told, was very good, both lots of chips were cold and completely tasteless. I do not know what they had been cooked in but it lacked something. The chips also appeared to have be cut into huge chunks with a meat cleaver. As a last resort for some taste we tried the tomatoe sauce in the tired looking dispenser. It was so thin and tasteless a cynic may say it was watered down. We left not just disappointed (a nice night out spoilt) but surprised that a guide book would...

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Carlo's, and it was an experience to remember. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by the warm and friendly staff who made me feel right at home. Their attentiveness and genuine hospitality set the tone for a wonderful meal.
The star of the show was undoubtedly the fish and chips. The fish was cooked to perfection, with a crispy golden batter encasing moist and flaky fish. The chips were equally impressive, perfectly seasoned and crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside. Each bite was a delight, and the quality of the ingredients was evident.
The ambiance at Carlo's is cozy and inviting, making it the perfect spot for a casual meal with family and friends. The staff went above and beyond to ensure that every aspect of our dining experience was enjoyable, from the food to the service.
In summary, Carlo's offers not only amazing fish and chips but also a warm and welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel valued as a customer. I highly recommend Carlo's for anyone looking for a delicious and delightful...
Read moreWent last night and I can say I wasn't really impressed overall. The chips were nice and as was the gravy, but the tub was just thrown in the bag upside down. Ordered fish and chips- got given just the cod not the chips. (It was too late to go back by the time we opened the bag). Luckily grandmother managed to share some chips from someone else in our family. The atmosphere was very tense and the staff seemed very miserable. Only one of the staff seemed nice- the lady with the colourful hair who was doing the gelato. The tartar sauce was a disgusting mess- it tasted okay at the top of the tub but was awful underneath. Blatantly scammed a foreign couple near us that ordered fish and chips and a cheese savoury- charged them over £22 when I worked out that they should have been charged roughly £15. The children's prices were obscene as were the options. Would not go back here because of the tense atmosphere, the prices and the blatant scamming of people. Which is a shame as the chips and...
