I love Fish & Chips since my early childhood so always have nostalgia any time I have it, so I am always looking out for new places to try. I do not live local to this chip shop so maybe that’s why it has taken me a few years to finally get myself here as I wouldn’t have any other reason to come over to that side of Birmingham. It was a 15 minute bus ride in to town from mine and then 30 minutes on the X24 which drops you right outside George & Helens. I had to wait 10 minutes for the large Fish & Chips which was made fresh and cost £12.50p Shame there isn’t a seating area to eat inside and lucky for me the weather was good so I walked 5 minutes round the corner to a park and sat on the bench to have my treat. The locals in the park seemed very friendly and said hello as they walked past me, which I appreciated. I really enjoyed the Fish, the batter nice and crispy and the Cod inside proper flakey 👍 The Chips was nice but for some reason I was expecting them to be different to what I imagined after reading multiple reviews over the years. I will definitely come back and visit again and give them another go. The woman who served me was polite and good customer service.

Overcooked doner meat so it had the texture of cardboard plus a stone in the mushy peas. Staff responded it was because they're fresh peas there may be the odd stone so watch out if you have the mushy peas from here!

The two stars for George & Helen's fish and chip shop are, believe it or not, my attempt to be generous... 1 star for the pleasant staff and the other for a generous portion of hot, fresh chips.

Unfortunately that's the last positive thing I have to say, because the cod part of my fish & chips order was nothing short of disgusting, and that is no exaggeration.

Now I have had my fair share of fish and chips over the years, and so I am aware that fish batter can soften a little in transit. But I have never seen such a sorry, soggy looking piece of fish in as long as I can remember.

The batter was almost brown in hue and uniformly squishy to the touch - it proved impossible to transfer to the plate without the batter falling off in ugly, soft clumps.

The fish it concealed wasn't much better - though, chewy and with an ugly grey tinge.

Don't take my word for it - take a look at the two photos I am about to attach. One shows how brown, dull, soft and saggy the fish looked like when I unwrapped it, and the other how grey and unappetizing the fish meat itself was.

I had such high Hope's for George & Helen's after scanning reviews and reading the celebrity endorsements. To say that I am disappointed is an understatement.

This is the first time in a LONG while when I couldn't finish a takeaway meal. Three quarters of the meal ended up in the bin.

Just awful: do yourself a...

George and Helens COUNT YOUR DAYS!!!

I ordered donner kebab and chips, and when I didn’t see the kebab on heat, I asked if it was hot. The lady assured me it was, so I believed them. I got home, and the kebab was lukewarm to freezing. I was fuming! Took it back, and they offered me the same cold kebab, which I flat out refused and asked for a refund. The guy with black hair was so argumentative which I believe to be the owner?. He tried to show us steam, which is ridiculous and laughable —why show us steam when we are telling you the kebab was cold?! THE KEBAB WAS COLD, SIR! He kept trying to argue, but the food we brought back was right there evident for him to see. We did get a refund in the end.

To the owners: you really need to step up your professionalism and quality. Your donner kebab lacks flavour, and it’s clear something needs to change with your supplier. Never argue with your customers. Every business should want returning customers but you clearly do not value that. I will NEVER return nor recommend.

People, I know sometimes you’re hungry and desperate for something to eat but, save yourself the money/trouble and...
