My husband, kids and I have been meaning to visit this place for a while after seeing it on Instagram and hearing rave reviews not only about the pancakes, but the service. Today was the day we took our 30min drive to visit Kumo ('cloud'), and I have to say, the four of us were not disappointed. It is situated on a super busy road in one of the busiest areas of the city, so we parked down one of the quieter side streets.
On entry, you realise that it is a small venue, but that's what makes it more intimate and special. We were immediately greeted with a smile by the guy behind the counter, which my kids really appreciated. The menu is small, but this is again something that makes it special - you aren't overwhelmed, and the options are really tasty. The kids opted for the Bueno pancakes, and we opted for the cinnamon glaze and the biscoff. We sat down at the tables (on benches and stools) and played some 2-player games on the mobile, which our server got into conversation with us about, even with the kids. He was a genuinely warm and attentive server, and again we really appreciated that.
Now to the pancakes - I completely understand why this place is called Kumo! The pancakes tasted, as my little girl exclaimed at the time, like clouds. Not only did they look amazing, they were the softest, fluffiest pancakes we have ever had. The flavour on top was just right and struck the perfect balance with the cream and the melt-in-your-mouth consistency of the pancakes. They are also surprisingly filling;not too heavy at all, they are just right, even after eating a full meal (you'll always have space for these!). After engaging in further conversation with our server, our daughter insisted that we leave Kumo a 5* review, so I am keeping my promise.
We will definitely be back, and genuinely wish this place nothing but success. Thank you to everyone at Kumo for making our Sunday afternoon that little...
Read moreI randomly came across Kumo as I googled dessert places in Birmingham, I adore South East Asian cuisine and took Kumo up by chance to try!
And they didn't fail to impress. I thoroughly loved the Japanese pancakes. The service is wonderful, polite, respectful, and joyful, and the atmosphere is staying true to the Japanese culture, which is keeping things simplistic and minimalistic to maintain that excellent quality in their service and pancakes.
So don't let the small menu fool you. That tells you what they do is good, really good, as their focus is on getting those pancakes on point!
Kumo really impressed me, the food, their business model, style, and service as it showed that they are staying true and confident in their culinary art of Japanese pancakes.
I loved it the first time, and have since been back... 3 times in the same month. Guilty, I know! But I absolutely love the pancakes. The original is the best! Jzk brothers definitely coming back... next week possibly :)
Ps yes, the place is small, and maybe kumo, as they grow, can grow into a larger place with more seating but definitely still worth it!
Pss parking is a nightmare, and location is so hectic as a Northerner new to West Midlands, I can confirm that driving parking is on another level.
See you...
Read moreThese Japanese pancakes were light, voluminous and fluffy; it’s obvious that the owner has been trained well, and has perfected his recipe. Make sure to be patient when you go: these are made fresh to order, and it does take some time to cook(as does all fresh food, so chill out). It’s a small establishment so the seating is limited when busy, but wherever you eat them, they’re delicious. The pancakes themselves are soft, cushiony and only mildly sweet, as a lot of East Asian desserts tend to be. If you don’t like sweet desserts then go for the original, otherwise all the toppings are winners. The sweet toppings paired with the mildness of the pancakes means you get to avoid the sickliness found in your typical dessert. Service is good; the brothers are kind, friendly and attentive, and the prices are very very good for something freshly made and takes...
