The Bell Lane Fryer — Restaurant in Bodmin

Upon arrival, we already had a bad taste in our mouth as the staff didn’t welcome us in, no one even said hello, they were too busy gossiping and chinwagging, that should have been our sign to turn around and exit. The food was bland, no one had seasoned the food with salt and vinegar as per the request(it was written in black and white, ordered on the kiosk). The fish was greasy, soggy, tasteless, tastes frozen, will cost you about half a mortgage ,nothing was fresh about it. (Refer to image 1 to see the pool of grease). Secondly, please refer to image 2 for the ‘BBQ ribs’, well, where do I start with the description of these ribs, I think the photo really does speak for itself, however I’ll add the description of the taste, these ribs were dry, fatty, tasted about 6 hours old. There was no sight of the BBQ aspect on these ribs. The mushy peas tasted as thought they came from a can, they were bland and not exactly edible. The battered sausage wasn’t greasy, was nice however tasted like your typical battered sausage. The can of Diet Coke was excellent , would definitely recommend to everyone, it was chilled and spot on. The bottle of Rio, again, was outstanding, I think this factor may be due to the staff not having any involvement with the preparation of these items. The fishcake, just like the battered sausage, was nice however nothing to shout about. The chips were decent, I have had better and I have had worse, they would have been even better if there was salt added as per the order, again, this information was printed black and white on the receipt and the order that said ‘chefs’ had received. The buttered bap was outstanding as it was shop brought, the ‘chefs’ who had NO HAIR NET ON, didn’t have much involvement nor input with the preparation process of said item. The Bell Lane Fryer in my personal opinion is the best Fish and Chips Shop in Bodmin. Al and his super friendly team are brilliant. Menu very extensive with so much choice. Also lunchtime offers available. Bonus is takeaway or eat in on offer. Car parking free opposite free after 4pm too. Not many Fish and Chip shops still do Saveloys, but pleased that they have since last year. Taste lovely so good too. Portions are very good and very reasonably priced. Been going there for many , many years and always enjoyed the food. Give them a go, you won't regret it 😁

Just had Cod and Chips tonight. On 22nd July 2022. Been very disappointed recently with the chips. Either really greasy, or soggy. Probably doesn't help when they are put in the boxes and left to sweat. Tonight came home with Cod and Chips. Had to heat them in the oven. Chips were tasteless and very soggy. Cod was good though. Sorry to say Bell Lane has lost its 5 Star rating from me. One being knocked off. Please please bin the boxes and bring back paper. This is ruining great fish and chips by making it sweat.

Visited once more on the 27th June 2025 as the Chinese takeaway was unfortunately closed. Had two Saveloys and chips. Saveloys looked terrible but they didn't taste too bad. Unfortunately had a very poor experience. Very young staff working, young ladies were all very polite & pleasant but inexperienced. Young man appeared very self important and was quite rude and arrogant when I queried how long my order would be as I had already been served my ice cream shake but was still waiting for food (3 basic meals) 15 minutes later. He told me there were other people before me but he had served multiple orders after mine then he spoke to me like I was stupid. I have no issue waiting but my query was why I was served an ice cream shake and told my food would be ready shortly to then still be waiting over 15 minutes later. When I got food home I was disappointed with Fish bites. They were not hot, they did not look like fish bites I had had previously and they did not taste very nice.
