We visited twice last year. The first time they put cheese on my mushrooms, despite me stipulating I had a dairy allergy, they claimed it was vegan however, as a lifelong vegan I know the difference between vegan and dairy. They took it away and came back with it scraped off, I could still smell the cheese. My husband ate it and I ate something in the car that we had with us.
We returned several months later hoping it was an honest mistake because they were busy and asked for our meal to be gluten free & vegan. They assured us their bread was gluten free and vegan, I asked where it was from because I have been caught out before and had gluten free bread that has egg in it (severe allergy). When the meal arrived I triple checked with the waitress and as a result the manager brought a loaf upstairs and literally plonked it on the table, clearly annoyed.
It was Tesco's own seeded bread in a vacuum packed bag. It has honey in which is NOT vegan. I left the bread and ate the rest of the meal, cautiously and we have not returned.
Allergies are serious, I carry epi-pens with me but would really rather not have to use them so when asking if food is suitable the owner needs to not get annoyed with customers and understand that they have zero choice where allergies are concerned but not only that, they are meant to be a vegetarian restaurant and therefore one would have thought they would have a better understanding towards vegans.
