I love The Old Bookshop - my favourite pub on North Street and would never give it anything less than five stars. Beers, atmosphere, music, service, general ethos - all perfect. They've recently launched their new menu after a series of pop-ups and residencies and I'm really impressed at how they've made a completely vegan German-inspired menu with enough options to keep most people happy. My one bit of feedback on the menu is that it feels like it needs a bit more detail on what the burgers/sausages/fishless fingers/schnitzels etc are made from. I know this is available on request for allergen reasons but even as someone without allergies I still prefer a bit more info in order to make an informed decision - vegan versions of meat dishes can vary massively depending on whether they're tofu, seitan, pea protein, soya, banana blossom etc etc. The food is all great but the lack of info on the menu did put...
Read moreHad an amazing time at The Old Bookshop while visiting Bristol. A great, buzzing atmosphere as soon as you come off the street. If you can't get a seated table, there are standing tables near the bar which is a nice touch Loved the quirky artwork on the walls and pictures.
I've always been a big fan of German beers in particular wheat beers - and this is a great place to come, if this is your thing. One of the best selections in the UK I've seen. The Jacob on draft was delicious, along with the usual German classics (see the Augustiner in the photos).
All of this was complemented by the delicious vegan tapas-style dishes. I don't always eat vegan cuisine when I go out but I guarantee even meat eaters would enjoy this feast.
The staff were very friendly and the clientele just generally very pleasant. I'll definitely be back to visit The Old Bookshop next...
Read moreWe visited last week, for the first time since its re-launch, arriving just before it opened at 4pm (Tuesday). Very friendly welcome from the team there, two real ales on handpump plus several keg beers and a double chiller with lots of Belgian, German and other beers in cans and bottle. Several 0 alcohol options there too, which is good to see. The bar has moved and the whole space given a refresh, with more Belgian signs on the walls and a more sensible arrangement of seating, as the previous entrance has been blocked off. There are three main seating areas inside - watch out for the semi-hidden step down from the top bar area to the larger room. Two toilets at the rear (up a step or two). There is also a garden room and tables and chairs out on the pavement at the front. We didn't eat, but had a lovely,...
