My recent visit to The Channings for an evening of dining left me thoroughly impressed, despite the inadvertent timing of my arrival coinciding with a bustling weekend brimming with energetic uni students. Despite the lively atmosphere, the remarkable service provided by the dedicated team at The Channings remained unwaveringly exceptional. Stepping into the establishment, I was immediately struck by the charm of the dining area, heavily reminiscent of a bygone era. The tasteful decor and vintage accents added a nostalgic touch, creating an ambiance that I found immensely appealing. Securing a table by the window was an added bonus, offering picturesque views of the surrounding area and enhancing the overall dining experience. Throughout the evening, the attentive and friendly demeanor of the two waitresses attending to our table was noteworthy. Their genuine warmth and frequent check-ins ensured that our needs were promptly attended to, adding a personal touch to the evening. Now, onto the highlight of the evening—the food. Opting for the vegan beef burger with chips, I found myself pleasantly satisfied by the burst of flavors with every bite. The vegan patty was cooked to perfection, and the chips were delightfully crispy—a testament to the culinary skill of the kitchen staff. While the weekend crowd certainly added to the lively ambiance of The Channings, I couldn't help but imagine returning on a quieter weekday, when the pace is more relaxed, allowing for a deeper appreciation of the restaurant's charm and hospitality. In conclusion, The Channings is a hidden gem that I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone seeking a delightful dining experience. From the inviting ambiance, friendly service, and great food, to the vintage-inspired decor, it's a place that leaves a lasting impression. I eagerly anticipate my next visit, eager to explore more of what this wonderful establishment has to offer.

Rather belated review for a one night stay on Thurs 16th November (busy with other day trips etc). Lovely room (I think no. 33, family room top floor). I was lucky enough to get swapped into this room as a solo traveller as the planned occupant had trouble with stairs. Please note as it's an old Victorian building there's no lift. Can't fault the evening staff (who doubled up on the bar) several ladies who were friendly, smiling and couldn't do enough for me. Next day had the full english breakfast which was good value at about £10 ish. Bar area nice lots of lighting and high ceilings. Will definitely put this hotel on my list next time I'm in Bristol. I paid £45 for 1 night room only which was more than worth the money, this was booked something like 6-8 weeks beforehand. Lots of pubs within walking distance. About 12 mins flat walk from Clifton Downs Railway station and 15-20 mins downhill walk to the City Hall (was volunteering at the beer festival). Thanks staff for aclovely stay x.

Over the last year I have visited Channings every week for their power events AND the guys at this venue truly have it on lock down. Genuinely. The place is busy and that is every time I visit but Dan the manager ensures it's filled with a proper positive vibe and everything you could need for a venue to offer your night out. Whatever you need, Channings has got you! Damn guys. There's even a dude called Aston working behind the bar and him and the rest of the team bend over backwards to deliver. Lewis runs the poker on Tuesday night and it's fantasic. If you've never played and want to start, I genuinely can't think of a better bunch to start you off. Apart from Ed.

I have just returned from a night away in Bristol this week for my brothers university graduation and unfortunately this hotel was disgraceful and I was left very disappointed by my stay. ||The room itself (26) was outdated, dull, beige coloured and in need of some desperate renovation. There was plastering hanging off the wall in the bathroom, chipped windowsills, a wonky TV and marks all over the walls. The window didn’t shut either and we were placed in a room on the top floor, up a lot of stairs despite travelling with a baby and all our belongings. ||I had the worst sleep imaginable as the “double” bed is tiny and the mattress rock hard. Also the walls are so thin that you can hear other guests shutting doors and walking up and down the stairs. Due to our window not shutting either, we were woken up several times in the early hours by people shouting outside. The room was also absolutely boiling and the fan provided was pointless with an open window and so I found myself really sticky and uncomfortable during my stay and I honestly couldn’t wait to leave. ||The bathroom door didn’t shut unless locked but the lock was so stiff that it was a struggle to open it and so we just had to use the bathroom with the door ajar and no privacy as we feared we may get stuck in there otherwise. The sink also constantly dripped and wouldn’t turn off properly. ||There was a packet of opened tissues on the floor when we arrived, a pubic hair on the toilet seat and I found myself walking around with shoes on due to the carpet being dirty so I don’t believe it was cleaned properly before our arrival either.||Whilst we didn’t bother complaining during our stay (we had arrived late due to traffic and as we were travelling with a baby, we didn’t want to have to move rooms as she had gone straight to sleep), I find it unbelievable that the hotel would actually put guests in a room in such a state, especially as it wasn’t fully booked and there must’ve been other rooms in a slightly better condition than this. ||Overall I wouldn’t return to this hotel or recommend it. It’s not like it was even cheap at £85 a night and so you would not expect to have to stay somewhere so disgusting. ||The only positive was the breakfast the next morning as the hot food is cooked to order so you know it’s fresh and there was also a good choice of continental too. It’s just unfortunate that the rooms let the rest of the hotel down.||The cleaner said the hotel is due to close for a renovation however if you read back through the reviews, guests have been saying for years this is needed and so I wouldn’t rely on it happening any time soon and even so, the damage is done now and we would...

I've never left a review before - but feel it's important to warn others before going here. Without doubt had the worst eating experience here. Staff were disinterested, slow, rude, uninformed, and at points were aggressive. My boyfriend is very allergic to nuts, and they were really unhelpful with this. When checking if there were any concerns, he was given an allergy book - confusingly set out - where (this wasn't explained to us) you had to check each element of your meal individually. They gave us the wrong book the first time, and weren't able to give us any advice themselves. When the food arrived, there was stuffing that looked like it had nuts, no-one working there had any idea if it did have nuts in - even though it's apparently a standard on every roast. After being told then we were supposed to cross reference every element on the plate in the allergy book (surely it should be done by whole meal as one, or at least tell the customer, if the customer is required to check this themselves to minimise any potentially life threatening risks?), the staff gave us the book to check again. When we mentioned to their staff that this hadn't been very clear, and with the potential for a dangerous outcome, they were aggressive, defensive and completely shook us off. No apology about this, and we were completely shouted down - I (and many of the people I was with) have worked in customer service and as a waitress for years, and I wouldn't dream of speaking to an upset customer like this. The food we had was very poor, potatoes and veg tasted/texture was like they had been reheated and were a day old, other food tasted like it was from packet mixes. Service was slow (food being brought out over an hour from ordering - and still then brought out in batches over 10 minutes so food was cold for some of our party when we started eating), and communication was bad between the staff - we were told multiple times by different staff members that a menu option had run out and would be swapped. The bathrooms were dirty too. After all that, we had to wait at a near empty bar to pay where staff didn't acknowledge us. It was almost funny - and a fitting ending to such appalling service. We very nearly just walked out - even after loudly speaking about this, the waitress in front of us didn't even make eye contact with us. I've been to multiple Greene King pubs and never had anything like this. Such a shame as it's a beautiful setting with a beautiful beer garden - there's so much potential, if the service hadn't...

DO NOT STAY HERE!!! DO NOT LISTEN TO GOOD REVIEWS!!! ITS DISGUSTING!! I had an awful experience at Channings hotel. Unfortunately, from start to finish, my stay was riddled with issues (AKA BUG INFESTATION)

Firstly, when we arrived at the reception there was no one to be seen and we tapped on the bell multiple times and no one came so i had to go to the bar just to get someone to check us in. I was greeted by a very stressed rushed member of staff who said that they were understaffed (not a very good first impression).

When passing over our room key, she just just to warn you that I have been told that there is some lady birds in your room and we are waiting for someone to come and fix it. We were like ok, thinking it would be a couple on the window. Got in there there was LOADS OF LADY BIRDS all over the room!!! It was so disgusting they were flying and crawling all over the place, bare in mind the member of staff said that the cleaner had already hoovered some up so god knows how many were in there before!!

So we went straight back down to reception, again had to speak to the person at the bar and wait for someone to come to reception. I said sorry but I'm not staying in that room it's disgusting. She said she completely understood and let us see another room, this one then had a broken window and stains on the bed!! Worst hotel I have ever seen.

Went back down for the 3rd time and said we are not staying here and I asked whether they would be able to transfer us onto another hotel and she said all she can do is give us a refund. Bare in mind to stay in Bristol it's over £200 for a last minute hotel so we couldn't afford to pay that and had already paid £15 to get an uber to the hotel.

Luckily we managed to make other arrangements! I cannot complain about the staff member as she was trying everything she could to help our situation but it could have been easily avoided.

At the end of the day, who wants to stay in a hotel that thinks it's okay to put guests in a bug infested room???? Can't imagine what the kitchen is like!!!

Overall, I was extremely disappointed and I would not recommend this hotel to anyone and hope management takes these concerns seriously and makes necessary...
