I’m blown away by how incredible the food is in this food stall. Here in Bristol, even if you are willing to pay more than £10 per person, it is still tremendously difficult to find good Japanese food. But here in DonDon, not only you can taste authentic Japanese food (as this food stall is operated by a true Japanese), the price is super affordable too. You only need to pay £6 to get a Japanese donburi.

FOOD You can customise it by choosing 2 mains (Pork belly, Fried kitchen, or Fried tofu with miso and walnut sauce) and up to 3 sides (kale, carrots, beans, lotus roots or aubergine). Japanese sticky rice is included. The pork belly is tender and flavourful. I really love the miso and walnut sauce which elevated the fried tofu into a whole new level. I also really liked the kale and lotus roots as they are well seasoned and they taste really nice.

LOCATION DonDon is a food stall in the St. Nicholas’s market, meaning that there are no seatings available. There are a lot of tables and chairs nearby so you can eat there.

I’ve visited here a few times now on lunch breaks over maybe last 2 years and I will say it’s impossible not to give this a 5star rating!

My favourite and go to dish here is the fried chicken donburi, sweet and succulent chicken thigh, with a golden crisp with mouth watering flavours this dish really hits that Friday treat vibe.

Freshly cooked sticky rice with that touch of rice vinegar and those pickles of the week always hit! And with that umami mayo with leak and garlic just tops off the dish.

When I say this place is proper food it really is! Real flavours real food cooked with real passion! - such a diverse menu also, another favourite of mine is the Japanese curry, with potato, carrots and onion just hits the spot when you need something with big depth of flavour and warming.

Really good spot this a hidden lunch gem!

Price point is perfect, food quality and great service!

This place is wonderful. The donburi is delicious, and the tofu a real favourite (remarkably, because I disliked tofu for years but now I’m a convert!) Dishes are made fresh but service is very quick. Contactless payment speedy and simple. All the toppings and extras are a delight. Prices are good value. Simple menu – there is enough of a choice to keep everyone interested but not so much as to be hard to choose. The entrance is wheelchair accessible – no step. The guy who runs it is very good natured and goes the extra mile.
