I am compelled to share my recent disappointing experience at Fitzbillies in Cambridge, which was unfortunately overshadowed by notably rude service, particularly from a man in a blue jumper. My visit, filled with anticipation for a delightful scone, turned sour from what I encountered.
Upon ordering my scone, I was taken aback to learn that jam and cream—staples of this quintessential British treat—were considered "extras". This revelation was delivered in a dismissive tone by the staff member in the blue jumper, whose approach lacked any semblance of the courtesy or warmth one might expect in such a renowned establishment. The absence of upfront communication about additional charges for traditional accompaniments was both surprising and misleading.
The situation escalated when, after paying for my order with the intention of taking it away, I took a moment to add sugar to my tea—a simple gesture of self-service given that it hadn't been done for me. It was then that the same individual, with an air of unwarranted authority and rudeness, asked me to leave. This request was not only unreasonable but also conveyed in a manner that was both humiliating and entirely uncalled for.
This experience has left a bitter taste, not from the tea or the lack of jam and cream, but from the treatment received by the staff member in the blue jumper. It's disheartening to witness such a lapse in basic hospitality and customer service, particularly in a place as esteemed as Fitzbillies. Hospitality is as much about the service as it is about the food, and on this occasion, both were...

Few places in Cambridge are as iconic or as delicious as Fitzbillies. Since 1920, this beloved bakery and café has been a cornerstone of the city’s food scene, and walking past without grabbing something is practically impossible once the smell of caramel and pastry hits the air.
Let’s start with the Chelsea bun, because it is, quite simply, legendary. Sticky, spiced, gloriously gooey this isn’t your average supermarket swirl. It’s dense, rich, and generously glazed, with that unmistakable hit of cinnamon and a treacly sweetness that clings to your fingers in the best possible way. It’s worth the pilgrimage alone.
But Fitzbillies offers more than just buns. Their brunch is beautifully done elegant without being overdone. From smoked salmon and poached eggs to hearty full English plates and perfectly brewed coffee, everything is served with a balance of tradition and quality. The service is brisk but friendly, and there’s a comforting, slightly old-world charm to the whole place, as if time slows just a little while you’re inside.
The interior feels refined but cosy, whether you’re tucked into the original Trumpington Street branch or grabbing a quiet table at the café on Bridge Street. It's perfect for everything from solo morning coffees to long weekend catch-ups.
In a city full of history, Fitzbillies continues to stand tall not just as a nostalgic institution, but as a genuinely excellent place to eat. Don’t leave Cambridge without stopping in. And definitely don’t leave without a...
Read moreChelsea Bun, Flat White = Work of Art! A Must Stop. This place is raved about it seems by everyone, yes including locals. It's a perfect little coffee shop/cafe for breakfast in the morning. The Trumpington St. location is the original cafe and the one that I made as my "go to" for the start of my mornings. Attached is the Fitzbillies Bakery Shop of which I had no need for but the displays looked amazing and if I were throwing a celebration I would definitely be contacting them for the pastries.
On a recommendation it was insisted that I try the famous Chelsea Bun. It was delightful, soft and gooey, and best of all memorable. It is really just a well done cinnamon pastry but oh is it well done. I recommend it if you like sweets, its sweet but not overbearing at least that is my opinion.
The Flat White was delicious as well, they take pride in no just the taste of the items but the presentation. My entire breakfast looked like something out of a magazine.
The value I thought was more then reasonable, large chain locations charge a bit more for crappy products and cheap over roasted coffee, so I was more then delighted to spend my money at a local location.
Out of all the sights in Cambridge the blue cup mug that my flat white was in and the accompanying plate that held my Chelsea bun is one of my favorite memories.
Even if you don't like coffee and pastries I'd recommend just stopping by its a cute place with a ton of charm and diverse menu, they have WiFi but its a small location with limited seating so I don't recommend sitting in the...
