I've eaten at Nana Mexico close to two or three dozen times, and the reason is Mexican food is my soul food, and on the rare occasion, Nana Mexico makes a burrito that is exceptional. Top notch exceptional, but the problem is there is no consistency. I'm leaving this review because after the embarrassingly poor chicken burrito I just ordered through Deliveroo (all bland rice, barely any chicken, zero salsa verde, almost no guac, at £9.50, and this wasn't the first time), I think I have an idea of what happens when I order from Nana Mexico and get a what looks like a burrito but tastes like someone didn't care.
Here's what a great burrito looks like from Nana Mexico. About a year or so ago, when guacamole was still a free option on the burritos, and the prices were around £7.50 for a burrito (prices have subsequently gone up on Deliveroo about £1-2 burrito, and now you pay £1 extra for guac, and there's a new inclusion of Doritos-quality tortilla chips and a thimble of salsa, all for what is laughably called "student prices" at £10) - about one year ago I ordered a £7 Carnitas burrito with guac and what I received was: mostly juicy carnitas, a healthy portion of guac, a reasonable poriton of rice and beans, a great balance of lettuce, cheese, salsa, etc. The key here is that not only was this all in proportion, but whoever wrapped the burrito did it in such a way that every bite gave you the opportunity for a mix of the quality ingredients. The burrito I ate today: mouthful after mouthful of rice, and then somewhere near the bottom of the burrito, a pitiful amount of dried out chicken, were talking almost no guac, which I paid extra for, and no salsa, which was supposed to be there.
So, here's what I think could solve all the consistency problems, Nana Mexico: A) standardize your scoop sizes, and focus on the meat being the main portion. They don't have to be "big ass burritos" if all were talking is starch inside a burrito because you overdo the rice and beans (there should be a NO RICE option, you're not selling RICE BURRITOS). I'd rather take a "really consistent, delicious burrito" than something gigantic. B) It doesn't have to be slapped into a wrap. I know it's basically fast food, but layer the ingredients length-wise and fold the tortilla so that the ingredients stay length-wise, nothing gets lost in a pocket at the bottom of the burrito. Most burrito places, from Mexico City to San Francisco have this problem, but the exceptional places take an extra five to ten seconds to do this right. C) Quality control. On multiple occasions I've ordered burritos through Deliveroo that arrive like no one cared. The first time I walked into Nana Mexico, when you first opened years ago, I met the owner, and some staff who seemed genuinely excited to introduce us all to Mexican food. There were real, freshly fried tortillas chips! All I'm saying is that I care about Mexican food, and I know you care, and £10 for something that clearly expresses a lack of care is an insult considering this food could be some of the best in Cambridge, and is the main representative of Mexican food in this town. In many cases this is the first burrito someone tries. If they get the burrito I had today, I feel sorry for them.
The first time I walked into Nana Mexico, I saw real tortilla chips. I'm talking someone had bought real corn tortillas, fried them, and said I should try them. They were totally authentic and delicious. I really thought that was a good sign of things to come for your establishment. Today, after horrible burrito, I open a small bag of really sorry tortilla chips that are really just thrown in as an afterthought with barely any salsa, all merely to rationalize the experience of overpaying for something disappointing that has the potential to be consistently part of a rad tradition of the best Mexican food rather than...
Read moreI used to love this place, since my first time in Cambridge 10 years ago. The quality of the food was great and so it was the staff, very friendly and welcoming. Unfortunately, now things have changed dramatically. Starting with the food, it doesn't taste fresh and delicious anymore, is more like a tasteless mix squeezed inside a burrito. The nachos, which before were always fresh, now taste stale and old. Most of the staff is not trained properly, it is very young people which are most likely at their first experience, they are not able to welcome the costumers properly and they simply put together a mediocre burrito which easily falls a part. After eating there a few times some months back, I had stomach problems, which I don't know if they were caused by poor the quality of the food or the lack of hygiene from the untrained staff (unfortunately I have seen them occasionally handling money or cards and then prepare food). The price is too much for the quality of the food and the experience, perhaps the quantity is okay. It is sad, but after my last visit I am sure I am not going to be eating there anymore. There are much better and safer options you can choose from in the...
Read moreAlthough the food here is generally very good it's let down by the staffing situation. On busy days you are rushed along due to large queues and this leads to the staff getting very confused and, in my case, completely forgetting an item for over 10 minutes. We ordered a quesedilla with salsa, a drink and churros. After paying and getting the first bit of food it turns out we just got a basic quesedilla and the drink hadn't been purchased.
I ate my food and then waited on the churros which I had been told were being cooked fresh. After a further 5 minutes of waiting my wife went and asked about the churros only to be told the cook had forgotten to start cooking them. We were refunded the price of them and left empty handed. Some of this confusion and panic might have been because they were training staff on a Saturday which isn't really ideal.
It's not bad during weekdays when it's quieter but of a weekend I'd avoid unless the queues...
