I want to preface this by saying that I have never written a negative review before. Having previously worked in the food service industry, I know how difficult it can be sometimes. However I was thoroughly disappointed with our dining experience this evening.
On arrival, we were pointed to a table in the corner. We sat down, and after about 10 minutes someone came to take our order. We ordered a tap water and an amalfi lemonade to drink, and to eat, the smoky aubergine pizza and a margherita with vegan cheese. We asked if we could have the pesto dip, but swap for vegan pesto, which we were told was fine.
The amalfi lemonade arrived after around 10 minutes. The food then arrived 15 minutes after that. When our food was served, the waiter placed down a dip and said “this isn’t vegan, okay?” To which I replied that we had ordered a vegan pesto dip. This was fixed promptly, and the waiter dashed off. However, I STILL hadn’t received my tap water. We were tucked away in the corner, the tables around us were empty, and there wasn’t a staff member in sight. Eventually I took it upon myself to stand up, leave my meal and walk to the bar to ask for my tap water, and a waitress brought one over for me and apologised.
Now onto the food itself, my aubergine pizza was nice enough but my partner’s vegan margarita looked like someone had sprinkled a bit of cheese on, let it melt for 10 seconds then scraped off the excess!! I have included a photo for reference. He said he felt like he was just eating dough with a bit of weak tomato on, which for £9.75 isn’t ideal.
The overall atmosphere in the restaurant was unwelcoming, the staff seemed totally uninterested, and not once during our whole time in the restaurant did anyone come over and check everything was okay, or ask how the food was etc. we felt like we had been shoved away in the corner and forgotten about.
I understand some places are more casual, but given the prices of the pizza and the fact that a service charge was automatically added without the option on the card machine to remove (unless I asked “can I remove my service charge please” and let’s be real no one wants to do that) I think the service and atmosphere we experienced was extremely disappointing. We booked a table this evening for our Valentine’s date, and ended up walking to the counter and asking for the bill as soon as we had finished eating. I won’t be eating here again, for a new restaurant in Cambridge it certainly isn’t making a good...
Read moreHad a pretty awful experience. Went here in a group for a celebration, and I am vegan (by choice) of nearly 2 years- so, obviously, I ordered garlic bread and margarita pizza and requested it was made vegan. Fine, no problem, everything was going well up until that point. They brought out the garlic bread one by one, and one of them said that they’d got the vegan garlic bread, so I signalled it was mine. I asked three times if they were sure it was vegan, because I could tell it looked incredibly similar to the other non-vegan food. THREE TIMES the waiter reassured me it was vegan. So, yeah, I push aside my worries, assume it’s just good vegan cheese, and eat a few slices. Five minutes later, another waitress comes out, holding garlic bread, and announces she’s got the vegan one. She puts it down and the cheese looks very different from everything else- including the one currently on my plate- and it’s visibly the vegan option.
They gave me the wrong garlic bread, insisting it was vegan despite the multiple times I asked and made sure it was. I had no idea. What if I wasn’t vegan by choice? What if it was an allergy? I’d be fired on the spot if I did that- rightly so!
Anyway, aside from that, it was fine I guess. The waitress who got it right and the ones who had no part in it seemed lovely, but I haven’t eaten dairy in 2+ years and now that’s been broken because of one person who didn’t want to go back and double check and just insisted it was instead of admitting they weren’t sure.
I don’t want to seem like the Karen in this, but I went home feeling like I wanted to cry- veganism (ESPECIALLY when it involves being dairy-free and possibly lactose intolerant) is a DIETARY REQUIREMENT, people!! It’s not hard to go back and check instead of ruining someone’s evening!!!
The place would probably be good for kids. Decorations scream kids birthday party. So do the...
Read moreOn a busy weekend lunch, I was seated immediately with my young son. The bench I was seated on had bits of food on it (olive, melted cheese, crumbs, etc) and there were no napkins. We got our food very quickly and it was undercooked in the middle but pretty good. Halfway through, I had to take my kid to the toilets since the doors were too heavy for him to open by himself. We left his blanket on the chair to show we were still there. The toilets were out of loo roll. We returned to watch the other hostess who had initially seated us shoving our two-seater table into the ones next to it to make a six-top (with our half-eaten meals still on our table!), then picking my son's blanket up pinched between her fingers and dismissively dropped it on the hostess station like it was radioactive. She was complaining about it to the other server at the station in a rude tone. I came up behind her and explained we had been in the toilet, and she was suddenly nice again and all apologies. The couple seated on the other side were watching the whole thing and had their jaws and the floor. After that, I quickly asked for a to-go box and left as soon as I could settle the bill. I appreciate the weekend must be busy and stressful, maybe they were short staffed or had a large party arriving. It wouldn't have taken long for her to exercise basic situational awareness and ask the other team members if we had actually paid and left. Looking at several other reviewers who had food poisoning after eating here, I feel we were lucky to have only had a service issue. As a busy parent, I don't dine out very often with my child, but I would absolutely not recommend the Cambridge Pizza Pilgrims. Choose literally any other pizza place in Cambridge! There...
