We had a family meal here last night for our Grandson's 1st Birthday, and the staff were very friendly and helpful.
However I'm sorry to say that we will not be returning unless they make it better value for money. We haven't visited Pizza Express for about a year, and the portion sizes have become miniscule, it wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't expensive, but it is.
We ordered a portion of garlic bread, which cost £3.90, and it was literally the size of a tea saucer - (something we would have expected in a 'Christmas Carol'), and we had to cut it into 6 portions, which took a certain amount of agility.
The pizzas which range from £9.00 to £16.00, were tiny, considering they cost about a £1 to make, and the fact that they were smaller than a diner plate was ridiculous. Our parents ordered two Four Seasons and the toppings were really stingy - no cheese apart from on a 1/4, and a small amount of slimy looking mushrooms and tiny burnt pepperoni. The others were not particularly tasty either.
A glass of medium wine costs nearly £6 and so was a large Peronni. So we felt as though we had to have either a soft drink or a small beer to compensate. We don't normally eat puddings, but as the starter and main was so small we felt as though we had to have more to eat and so ordered puddings which averaged around £4.95, the banoffee pie had two small lumps of banana which we only found in the last mouthful, and the ice cream was really watery.
Times are hard for restaurants, and management need to be looking at improving what they have on offer, and their customer's needs, otherwise they will be turning off permanently their existing customer base. Decors good, but you need to concentrate on offering good food and reasonable prices, customers are very savvy these days, as they have so much choice. Then management will find they do not need to cut portions to keep afloat.
Very disappointing...on the way back we looked into the array of other restaurants and wished we had eaten there - even a Fish and Chips meat pie looked alluring, as we all still...
Read moreBig Pizza Express fans, day out in Cambridge, a bit disappointed with our experience in this Pizza Express. Not sure if they were just short staffed, and how big the seating area is upstairs...the downstairs restaurant was quiet and is where we were sat. Maybe it was busy upstairs. It took quite a while for some one to come and take our order, once ordered the drinks took a while before they showed up. We had a shared starter, which when we have had it in other local Pizza Express restaurants are brought side plates instead we just ate off of the shared plate. Now whether I'm being fussy or if its just an expectation of good service, the mains came before they had cleared the table of the empty massive shared plate in the middle of the table. Regular Pizza Express customers would know that a single table for 2 people is pretty small. And so plonking down the mains without taking away the starter massive plate was well planned..... I had a pizza, which was ok, my partner had the pollo pesto pasta dish, which is lovely and he enjoyed the taste the portion size however was a little on the tight side, and not consistent with serving sizes in other Pizza Express restuarants, not much pasta, hardly any chicken, he ended up eating a few slices of my pizza. Before we had finished the mains, we had finished our drinks, no one came to ask how our meal was, or if we wanted another drink - and on trying to catch waiters eyes to ask, didn't work. When we finished our meal and they cleared our table we asked for the bill, we were brought the desert menus, I'm pretty sure if we just got up and walked out without paying they wouldn't of noticed. We did however pay, my partner is one for tipping even if service is questionable, I'm not.....he left a small tip where as my tip would've been improve your service and make your portion sizes consistent with the other restuarants. Won't be back...
Read moreGreat and attentive service, freshly-cooked food and authentic Italian cuisine put Pizza Express on my list of must-try restaurants.
For their unique starters, the texture of their doughballs al forno complemented the chewy cheese well (and I love that there's some crispy parts as well from the bubbling hot plate).
As for mains, the Duo Romana pizza is an excellent deal, the classic combination I got of the Fiorentina and American Jack a terrific balance for first-timers unsure what to try for their first time.
But this particular branch I need to give extra praise. The staff were very welcoming and always checked if I needed anything; kudos to their manager as well for being hands-on and helping out when it gets super busy.
I wish I could have tried using their app (which comes with freebies for first-time users and promos, plus cashless payments) but since my Google Account is set to the Philippines, the app was deemed incompatible for my phone (which is odd since my hardware is hardly outdated, being a Samsung S20 Plus). Not a dealbreaker, but I would have liked to have tried the service.
As for ambience and accommodations, tables are spaced well away from each other and chairs amply comfortable. You can have conversations with friends without worrying about disturbing other diners. Very much has that hole-in-the-wall vibe, which I...
