We were taken by our friends to Six to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary, which was very generous of them. Our starters were scallops, whitebait, soup, and all were lovely. Our main courses were Sunday roast beef, which my hubby picked, and he thoroughly enjoyed. I had the ribeye steak, and though not cooked as I had ordered medium to well done, it was tastey , French fries were disappointing, would have preferred proper chips, especially at the price that they charge. I ordered a pepper steak sauce, which was lovely and peppery, with not too much cream, just the way I liked it. Our friends selected the Tomahawk steak and ordered to be cooked to medium. I have added a picture, and you can see again that it is rarer than medium. The chef seems to just ignore the customers' choice and cook how they feel it should be eaten. With the steak, they ordered ROCKET & PARMESAN SALAD and a blue cheese sauce each. Only one was served, and it wasn't blue cheese. The waitress was so apologetic and got it sorted. However, the disappointment came when they tried to cut into the Tomahawk steak it wasn't tender at all. It was a terrible standard of steak. It was tough, not very tasty. It was also not very warm. They struggled through, but when they came to about 1/3rd through the couldn't eat much more, they asked for a couple of pieces to be cooked to a medium and they did this bit it didn't improve and they left it. When the waitress asked if everything was OK, we let her know about the Tomahawk meal. They offered us free desserts but we didn't want them. So they actually offered our wine free. The person who redeemed our faith in the restaurant was the bar manager, from Portugal, whose name i can't remember. He came over and apologised and chatted. The waitress was lovely also and dealt with our complaints in a very professional manner. Would I go back, yeah, probably, and I would just not have steaks.

Perched elegantly above the city, The Six rooftop restaurant at The Varsity Hotel is nothing short of sublime—a jewel in Cambridge’s culinary crown. With sweeping views of the historic skyline and a refined atmosphere that strikes the perfect balance between modern chic and old-world charm, this is a dining experience that lingers in memory long after the final bite. Our party indulged in a trio of masterfully prepared dishes: the Moroccan lamb skewer—succulent, aromatic, and grilled to tender perfection; the shrimp couscous—delicate yet bursting with Mediterranean flair; and the chicken curry—a rich, warmly spiced revelation that would give any Michelin-starred menu a run for its money. Dessert, however, was where The Six ascended to gastronomic greatness. The homemade apple crumble was comfort incarnate, but it was the sticky toffee pudding that truly stole the show—lush, decadent, and perfectly balanced. It has instantly entered our Top 5 Puddings of All Time list, and justifiably so. The handcrafted cocktails were bespoke brilliance. The Basil Grande—a fragrant, herbaceous concoction—was positively divine, each sip a celebration. Service throughout was attentive yet unobtrusive, befitting the restaurant’s upscale tone. Even the restroom experience deserves applause: immaculate facilities stocked with Elemis products—a luxe touch that perfectly echoes The Six’s commitment to excellence in every detail. A word to the wise: reservations are essential—this is not the sort of place you stumble upon; it’s a destination. And rightly so. After a serene afternoon punting on the River Cam with Scudamore’s, The Six is the ideal capstone to a fabulous day out in Cambridge. A meal here isn’t just dinner—it’s an occasion. Quite simply, posh perfection.

Overall – Disappointing and not great value for money! We decided to book somewhere in Cambridge to have Afternoon Tea to celebrate our 27th Wedding Anniversary. We decided to book up Six, as they offer an Afternoon Tea from 12pm (a lot of places don’t start it until around 2 or 3pm). The venue itself is very nice, you enter through The Varsity Hotel, and as the name of the venue implies, it’s on the 6th floor with views over the city/river (depending on whereabouts you are seated). The waitresses are all very pleasant, however, at a cost of £22.50 each, the Afternoon Tea was a bit of a let-down. On arrival we was asked if we wanted any water, we declined as we just wanted a coffee – I am glad we did, as overheard a few other tables saying that they had been charged extra for the water. The pictures on their website are a bit misleading! You get 4 tiny finger sandwiches each, sadly they are nothing special to write home about, made with supermarket bread and not much taste! The scones are OK, a bit dry, and the little chocolate / caramel puddings, served in a plastic shot-glass with wooden spoon are very sickly and we only had a couple of mouthfuls! In summary, a nice venue with good views, but the food wasn’t all that, it was quite expensive and we wouldn’t return on that basis.

Service is a JOKE! DONT COME HERE! When booking, the information was all wrong about the time slots and lunch/dinner menus. The booking reservation team gave wrong information. This was confirmed by another staff member after I called back to amend the booking, due to misinformation.

We arrived and made an order, 7 of us, celebrating my birthday, whilst being 8 months pregnant. The waiter asked how I would like my steak, then forgot and came to ask again, both times I told her (medium to well done, no blood) as I’m pregnant. She then came 20 minutes later asked how I wanted my steak as she forgot again.

My friend asked to taste some wine before ordering, the waiter agreed and ended up bringing her a full glass. When asked, she said sorry I forgot. Then the drinks came, except my mother in laws, when asked the waiter said sorry I forgot. And took the drinks order again.

Baring in mind this was a 3pm lunch on Saturday - they were not busy, standing around most of the time and us having to shout to get their attention.

Our food took forever, and the order came wrong, items was missing, dishes was incorrect, one waiter was rude and began arguing with me, I tried to explain we didn’t order this, she kept trying to prove her point until the manager came. I explained my steak is bloody and more like medium rare, he took it back and brought it to me again, with blood, I just ate it as I couldn’t argue anymore and just wanted to go home. Steak sauce is not included, never heard of this before. £2.50 per sauce if you don’t want to eat it completely DRY!!

Manager saw the issues, and brought over lemon shots for everyone, (excluding me as obv I’m pregnant) which was again annoying since I was the one with the most issues and my birthday.

Staff were completely disoriented! Arguing between themselves and all moody!

We asked for more water, the waiter came and poured for everyone and chose to purposefully ignore me holding my glass.

The manager could see there was still issue after issue and proceeding to bringing more alcohol and a bottle of wine for the table, (again pointless as I can’t drink) maybe he thought the drunker he would get us the less we would complain.

My friend ordered apple crumble for desert, it came with just apples and ice cream, no crumble. When asking the waiter, he said the crumble is there it just got melted under the ice cream. And walked off! In what world does that make sense, I think he was just taking the Micky at this point.

The bill was incorrect, stuff on there that we didn’t order, finally, we had to ask them to take off the already paid deposit of £70 (£10 each) as they didn’t.

This place is a SHAMBLES. AVOID LARGE BOOKINGS! They are not capable...

So we dined at your restaurant last night (table of 8) and I was absolutely underwhelmed and even quite angry by the time we left. But I'll start with the positives.

We had a friendly greeting on arrival at just gone 20:30pm by your doorman. Your staff in the restaurant also seemed warm and welcoming as we were shown to our table. When our cocktails finally arrived, they were fantastic. My partner's steak was lovely and the rest of our meals were okay (although the pizza was rather chewy).

Aside from the above, unfortunately:

We booked well in advance and got shoved on a table which had the view of the kitchen tea pot collection as opposed to the panoramic views of Cambridge the restaurant offered. Also a poor choice as you knew on booking this was a special occasion, 30th birthday.

This fits with the fact you did not acknowledge it was my partner's 30th birthday AT ALL. Not a verbal mention, a free drink, a token dessert. Very poor.

We waited for over an hour for our food with no communication or apology and my partner's steak came last after a considerable delay. Given it was his evening and one of the quickest meals, I was left baffled.

We paid an £80 deposit for the table which you originally failed to deduct from the bill. There was very little apology when this was addressed with your waiter who just said "my fault" as he put the bill down with a penned ammendment in front of me. Again, no token gesture such as a free drink to make up for this poor service.

I was told no balloons or decorations in the restaurant so was very confused to find on arrival that the table behind us had a 30th balloon. You simply CANNOT write an email that says "no table decorations to garauntee the consistency of dining experience for all our customers" and then not enforce that consistency. A bridal party who arrived as we left also had decorations. I actually felt quite discriminated against at this point.

Overall, a bitterly disappointing experience for a restaurant with such a strong reputation.

I look forward to receiving...
