Canterbury boasts a wealth of charming streets, and nestled on one such lane is The Corner House, a restaurant that stole my heart (and my appetite) with its exquisite cuisine and warm atmosphere. From the moment I stepped inside, the inviting aroma of roasting meats and fresh herbs set the stage for a delightful dining experience.
My journey began with the rabbit, ham, and black pudding terrine. This might sound like an adventurous choice, but trust me, it was a revelation. The terrine was a delightful combination of textures – the smooth, earthy richness of the rabbit and the salty tang of the black pudding perfectly complemented by the savory notes of the ham. It was a symphony of flavours, each element singing in perfect harmony, leaving me wanting more.
The star of the show, however, was the confit pork belly. The slow-cooked pork arrived glistening and golden, with a shard of crackling skin shattering with a satisfying snap. The melt-in-your-mouth meat, infused with deep, savoury goodness. It was accompanied by a bed of creamy mashed potato, perfectly smooth and buttery, a crispy burnt ends croquette packed with flavour, seasonal greens that added a welcome touch of freshness, with a cider jus to tie everything together. Every element on the plate complemented the other, creating a symphony of flavour notes that had me savouring each mouthful.
The Corner House isn't just about the food, though the food is certainly a star. The restaurant itself is a charming space, with exposed brick walls and warm lighting creating a cozy and inviting ambiance. The staff, attentive and knowledgeable, added to the overall experience. They were happy to answer questions and guide me through the menu, making me feel like a valued guest.

Read moreThis being my first time in Canterbury (and the UK in general), my friends and I wanted to get some authentic British food. This place was only a 5-minute walk from our hotel (Hilton) and so we gave it a try.
The ambiance is amazing: they have lit candles all the way down, and a big, antique mirror in the back of the room that opens up the space while cleverly making the door to the bathroom entries more subtle. We did not see the rooms at all, but we can safely assume more of the same decor!
Anyway, on to the food. They gave us some rich, brown bread with butter to share (only problem is that there wasn't enough!), and the Elderflower Spritzer was very delicious.
The main courses were more expensive than we were expecting with a $$ rating on Maps, but we just ordered one plate for each pair of us, and our waitress took it all in very gracious stride. I forgot to take pictures because it smelled so good and I hadn't had a full meal in several hours but my friends got two Venison dishes and I shared a Pork Belly dish with my other friend.
The pork belly came with mashed potatoes, warm cabbage salad, gravy, a kind of jam, and a meat fritter. The belly itself was extremely tender, and the extras were delicious.
My friends testify that the Venison Suet Pudding was really good as well (as long as you don't hate mushrooms), and it also came with mash and cabbage, and probably additional components.
Overall, I highly recommend. The waitress (I think her name was Clare) was very friendly, and dealt very kindly with the issue of a bill being split 3 ways with 2 of them being paid with cash! A varied menu, perfect for foodies, quality ingredients, and moody ambiance all added to an overall amazing experience.

Read moreI booked a table for my wife and I as we wanted somewhere special for our 25th anniversary dinner. And we really were so impressed.
From the warm welcome when we walked in, to the exquisite food, excellent drinks menu, friendly chats with the waiting staff throughout, everything was perfect.
We were seated in a quiet corner, and handed the menus (as it was graduation week at the University of Kent in Canterbury there was a special table d'ote menu, three courses for £49), the a la carte menu, and (nice touch) a 'bin end' list for drinks. My wife chose a raspberry rum drink, and I had a local gin and basil 'smash', which was delightful (more than one was imbibed...) whilst we perused the menus.
After deliberating for some time, we decided on the olives for my wife and I had the black pudding scotched egg. All I can say is Wow!! Perfectly runny yolk, really crispy pants amd a lovely fruity sauce which complimented the black pudding to a tee.
For main courses, I had the flatiron steak and my wife had the hake, both of which were so good, the conversation stopped as we were concentrating on the food so much!!
No room for desserts, so a cocktail each (the house-recipe Old Fashioned was exceptional) and then we were on our way.
Huge thank you to the staff that served us (apologies, I didn't catch a name, but the sound lady with a fairy tattoo on the back of her upper left arm and the gentleman who said the gin basic smash was his idea were both perfect with their balance of professionalism and relaxed chat! They both made the evening that bit more special!
It wasn't cheap, but it was one of the best meals I've eaten (chef for many years, eaten in a fair few Michelin-starred establishments), so worth every penny!!
Will definitely be back next time we are...
