Stopped in here to pick up some dinner to eat on the ferry back to Scotland. My husband and I each ordered a rice bowl and a fruit tea.
The portion size was on the smaller side, but the food was lovely. I ordered the chicken teriyaki bowl and appreciated that the sauce was in a separate pot so as not to make all the contents soggy. Generous amount of sauce, too! (I used less than half). The tsukemono in the bowl were great as well. Loved the pickled red onions.
The tea was perfectly sweet, refreshing and well flavoured. I had the strawberry black tea and I'd recommend it.
The folks working last night were friendly enough, and asked us which utensils we'd prefer - forks or chopsticks. This was appreciated by my husband who is still improving his chopstick proficiency :)
The wait was only around 10 minutes and we made use of the small seating area as we waited. If you plan on sitting in to eat, bear in mind it's a bar style arrangement with only a few seats.
For the type of food we thought the prices were okay. Par for the course with Japanese food. Quality and selection wise we felt like it was good value for money.
(Bonus: I wasn't able to order it yesterday, but I saw that this place does mackerel sushi which is my favourite and heartbreakingly difficult to find. I've only found one other place in the UK that does it. Extra brownie points...
Read moreVery unfortunate experience. I had to use phone torch to read the menu.Small white writing on black paper in an already dark place. Some bulbs out. Onto food. I ordered chicken Katsu curry with rice. When it came the plate was cold meaning the food wasn't even luke warm. The size was like a starter plate. Seems like a pre bought chicken schnitzel sliced thinly. Less than two soup spoons of Katsu sauce. The sauce was more of a mild cold Chinese type curry. I liked it but no where near enough. A small portion of side salad about two soup spoons sizes again. I asked for a black coffee with cream. The first one came stone cold. As with starter the pleasant waitress agreed they were cold. I said just microwave it,as I know coffee machines take time to warm up. The second coffee was microwaved and was ok and as I like cream on it was palatable. When I went to pay I told the pleasant girl I doubt I would return . After she talked to owner I was given a discount. With an excuse the cold plate was for salad purposes. I said put the salad on a side plate. The salad did absolutely nothing to compliment the meal and doesn't belong with curry. The young waitress saved the day with her apologies and pleasantness. But I doubt I would return with small quantity not matching the...
Read moreVisited, what I believe to be, their newly opened sit in restaurant. It seemed to me that perhaps there was still some finishing touches to be made but it was very nicely finished and decorated.
I think with the sliding door it’s unclear if one should step in or not. For a Saturday midday, it was very quiet. Their menu is very extensive, it was certainly hard to choose! The vegetable gyozas were nice and crispy. I felt that my mango tofu rice bowl wasn’t strong in terms of mango flavouring and lacked much sauce for the rest of the rather dry rice sadly. Tofu was OK.
The chocolate cake, I felt, was extremely dry on the outer most edge, unsure if this was due to baking or perhaps effect from being in a freezer? The ganache was nice but perhaps an additional texture could be added to the sponge for interest. The “vanilla” ice cream was unfortunately artificial flavouring (no black vanilla orchid seeds #petpeeve).
Service was otherwise nice and I liked the Japanese style music, so I...
