One of my favourite coffee shops in Loughborough, lots of space and excellent coffee. The pistachio filled croissant isn’t as tasty as it could be but the Nutella and cream filled is good - not that you can go wrong with Nutella though! The ham & cheese croissant can be warmed and is glorious with the addition of their chilli jam. The brunch plate is the standout on the menu for me. Stunning sourdough toast and each item comes together wonderfully, the pancetta is a big upgrade to their previous brunch plate iteration but the loss of the halloumi was disappointing! The brookie croissant is nice but really should be warmed which staff are unable to do for even 10 seconds due to policy unfortunately. The sweet filled croissant options are actually sorely lacking in comparison to the new Nottingham cafe, with Loughborough being the flagship it would be great to have the heavily promoted filled croissants on social media here too. The staff are all very sweet and helpful, even when very busy or when I’ve popped in not long before closing for a takeaway coffee I’ve been served with a smile. The food is well priced for the quality you get and in terms of their drinks, they are priced very well especially the seasonal drinks which are fun and don’t have the markup which comes with a lot of other third wave coffee shops.

Public is a lovely place, beautifully designed and with amazing chefs who make the most delicious filled croissants and sausage rolls. I love that Ohh deer works with the cafe and has there products for sale too, its a great way to get artists work out there without it feeling pushy or overbearing. My one issue is perhaps style over substance? Its little things, but its clear the designer/architect didn't consult the baristas before buying the crockery! Mugs have no handles, which whilst seeming a small thing, when you have hot coffee, tea or chocolate, gripping onto hot ceramic suddenly isn't worth how pretty the pot might be. The seats are crowded too so its hard to navigate, and there dosen't seem to be accomodation for wheelchairs. I understand an older building cannot always be adjusted but there are means to accessibility. Food and drink is also pricey, but because its handcrafted, and with good ingredients, this I can understand.

One of the busier coffee shops in Loughborough with great coffee but service really needs some work. Waited 20 minutes for our coffee to show up with the single toasted sandwich turning up 5 minutes after that. When the food did arrive, it was burnt. They've also got this no laptop rule in place but it's not signed very well, so by the time you've committed to coming in you'll only see the no laptop signs on small A4 notes right at the till. Feels a little snobby, in a town that's essentially funded by students. I can understand the reasoning for such a policy, not wanting people to say here for 2 hours and only ordering a single drink or someone taking up the space of 4 possible customers. I just feel it could and should be more obvious (and where does the buck stop? 2 A4 notepads and my art set? An iPad and keyboard attachment? Or is it just no laptops). This was an update to a previous 5 start review.

We really like this place but have a few little niggles that could be easily fixed.

Price - is steep think London prices and they don’t give you a receipt so it’s hard to know what your £45+ total was comprised of.

Food can be hit and miss - we always order the franks chorizo, onion and cheese melt regularly on this weeks visit it was pretty much served as a sandwich and there was only the tiniest hint of franks buffalo sauce - where as the week before it was phenomenal. We were in a rush so we just ate it but I wish we went and asked for it to be rectified. The portion sizes are also small for certain things such as the smoked salmon dish is literally one slice of bread with cream cheese and smoked salmon - for the £10 price tag I would have expected at least two slices of bread. We have no problem with paying high prices for quality locally sourced produce but it needs to be filling and offer more than one piece of bread!

The place is Not really child friendly - Considering the place always has kids in they’re really missing a trick by not considering young families! They just need to have some smaller less sugar laden options for children. We generally pop in on a Saturday after my sons back to back football training and swimming lessons so as you can imagine he’s starving but there’s no real child...
