Delicious Blue Boy Burger, but Room for Improvement
I recently had the pleasure of visiting Beefy Boys in Cheltenham with my family during a trip to Bristol. As someone who had previously enjoyed their mouthwatering blue cheese burger at Grillstock festival in Bristol, 3 times, I was eager to indulge in the culinary delight once again. While the Blue Boy burger lived up to its reputation as utterly delicious, there were a couple of aspects of the experience that left room for improvement.
Let's start with the highlight: the Blue Boy burger. Having fallen in love with this burger's flavors during my first encounter at Grillstock, I was thrilled to taste it once more. The combination of the succulent beef patty and the blue cheese was as delightful as I remembered. However, I did notice that the burger was a tad greasier than I recalled from my previous visit to Grillstock. Despite this, I would still rate the Blue Boy burger a solid 8.5 out of 10 for its delectable taste and quality ingredients.
Unfortunately, the overall experience of dining at Beefy Boys was not as positive for my wife. As someone with a peanut allergy, she was left disappointed and frustrated by the lack of consideration for customers with allergies. The decision to have a peanut butter burger on the menu and to spread peanut butter on the burger while it's on the grill, meaning all their items are contaminated, effectively isolated my wife from enjoying a proper meal. All she was able to eat was the fries. This was particularly disheartening since the allergen menu did not mention the technique in which this this potentially hazardous ingredient cooked, and the information only came to light after we had been seated for quite some time and placed our order with the server. To quote the allergen menu: NUT/PEANUT ALLERGY We would like to note that our Beanie Boy does contain cashews. Our Beanie Patty is cooked in the same fryer as our mac patties, moz patties, mac and cheese balls and jalapeno poppers. However, our other sides (fries, wings) are cooked in a different fryer. (Notice no mention that peanuts are used on the grill?)
It's worth noting that peanut allergies have been on the rise, affecting a significant portion of the population. Given the prevalence of nut allergies, it's important for dining establishments to be accommodating and transparent about their ingredients and preparation methods. By neglecting to address this concern, Beefy Boys inadvertently exclude not only allergic individuals but also their companions, thereby missing out on serving a sizable clientele.
I genuinely hope that Beefy Boys takes this feedback constructively. I habe sent an email expressing my concerns and disappointment. I have fond memories of their exceptional burgers and would like to continue being a patron in the future. However, in order for that to happen, I urge the establishment to reconsider its approach to allergen awareness and communication. By making the necessary adjustments, Beefy Boys can truly stand as a welcoming and inclusive dining...
Read moreRedemption Arc.. So I was lucky enough to be invited back to the Cheltenham Branch following a disappointing visit during the Soft launch period.
Wowsers, what a difference a couple of weeks has made. The wait staff as per my previous visit were exceptional yet again, showing us to our table, being really attentive without coming across as overbearing and no request was too much hassle. Thank you for a seamless visit from that perspective.
Now here is where the biggest improvement lies. THE FOOD.
We ordered the Buffalo Wings and Jalapeno poppers as a starter (Usually brought as a side but can be requested as a starter). The wings were SUPER tender and well coated in the Buffalo sauce which had a great balance of flavour and if you've ever had buffalo sauce is one of the good ones. The Poppers were also exceptional. Arrived to the table piping hot with a super crispy crispy exterior. inside was a generous amount of melted cheese with some beautifully fresh Jalapeno's. Outstanding.
Fries I opted for the chilli cheese Fries, these were exceptional and just a messy as chilli cheese fries should be. Nice balance of cheese sauce melted cheese an a delicious and slightly spicy beef chilli (The chilli was fabulous). the Fries did loose their crispiness but they were were generously covered in multiple types of cheese and beef chilli. My Partner has the millionaire fries which she said were delicious and a alternative to the traditional "Fully Loaded" fries but still being a step up from just standard.
Burgers I had the OG Boy (Smashed patty) with extra patties so the burger was proper stacked. The burger was hot arriving to the table, dripping in melted cheese with all the trimmings that come with the OG boy. The only fault I could find was that the Burger was slightly over seasoned so was a little salty but that is to my personal taste so I totally enjoyed it and would 100% recommend. My partner opted for the Bacon Boy and like my burger was cooked to perfection (smashed) and all the extras were fully loaded.
Went for the Speciality shakes which we have had before and again these were amazing, tasted great and whilst they appear expensive are well worth the money as the portion is generous.
Following this visit I will 100% be back (visit planned at the end of march) and would not hesitate to recommend Beefy boys to anyone who asks for great places to eat...
Read moreAfter following the Beefy Boys story from afar, I finally managed to make the trip to a branch in Cheltenham. I thought this was a sure thing, burger induced endorphin rush guaranteed… the reality was a grey, dry squib of disappointment.
The first test of any burger restaurant is the presence (or not) of the question from the waiter when you order… “How would you like it cooked?” The absence of this question 99 times out of 100 suggests either: a lack of understanding of what makes a burger so great. or they don’t prepare the pattys fully on-site so aren’t allowed to serve them pink (or both).
The waiter didn’t ask how we wanted it cooked and was completely unhelpful when we asked if they could make sure the burger was as pink and juicy as poss.
Alas, the burger (double thick patty option) arrived and looked stunning until you cut into the meat to find it grey, dry and thoroughly overcooked. No combination of sauce, bun or condiment can rescue a dry patty. However you like it cooked, a good burger should and must taste amazing even if you strip away everything except the patty. It’s the difference between a gourmet quality burger and a cheap five guys / McDonald’s type of burger.
Also worth a mention that the smash burger (ordered by one of our other party) was juicy only because of the condiments and sauce but very dry and lacking in flavour in the meat department. The menu did state that the smash patty option is cooked well done but it was very very dry. Would be nice if there was an option to have it just seared rather than well done? (like other smash burger places do)
After revealing our disappointment to our waiter (a different / better one took over by this time), she took away the grey monstrosity and had them make a much nicer (slightly pink) fairly juicy burger. This was much better, at least you could taste the meat but it was too late, the bitter disappointment saturated the...
