I stopped off here last week as it appeared to be a hidden gem based on the reviews. Firstly itās great that itās free street parking outside. The cafe is very well decorated from the outside with nice artwork. Open entering I was greeted by a lovely lady. She was incredibly welcoming and upbeat. They provide breakfasts and lunches both hot and cold, as well as sweet treats, savoury snacks and drinks. In fact, they provide a great selection. You can takeaway or sit in as they ample tables and chairs. I was just popping by so I wanted to get something to takeaway. The lady was extremely delightful and helped me in choosing from the menu. Iāve never heard of a croque (she explained nicely what it was) so I went with the croque salmon. I also went with a sausage roll because they looked very appealing. I picked up a pastrami ciabatta for my wife. Obviously, I had to get a few sweet treats. I ended up going with a cinnamon swirl with icing, lemon meringue loaf and a chocolate chip banana bread. I had the salmon croque first which was very nice. I donāt think Iāve had salmon and cheese together before but they complemented themselves quite well. The croque is basically like a cheese toastie with cheese on the outside and it cooked in the oven. Next I had the sausage roll which was also good. The pastry was crisp on the outside but softer in the middle. I am not sure what sausage it was but it was quite nice. Although I did notice that it was a little cold in the middle so maybe could have done a little longer in the oven. The cinnamon swirl was ok. The pastry seemed a little stale. The flavour was fine but Iāve certainly had better. Both the lemon meringue and the banana bread were very good which we both enjoyed. My wife also liked her ciabatta. Overall, I am glad I visited. I wasnāt blown away by the food (hence the 4 stars) but itās still good reliable scran at a reasonable price. I would love to come back and sit in and have a cooked breakfast because they look fab! I love how everything is freshly made and itās a open kitchen so you see everything. Itās the service that makes this place excel. I havenāt been to many places were you are treated so nicely. You get a homely feel whilst here. I get the impression that they have their regulars and the staff build relationships with their customers which is lovely to see. I...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe have been visiting Cocorico since Ana and Mika moved from their previous venture, The Water of Leith Cafe Bistro, which we also loved.
We are regular visitors because we appreciate fabulous food, the friendly service and the relaxed atmosphere the cafe offers. The Croques are always excellent, as are the bakes - if you get a chance to sample Mika's Framboisier cake, take it!
Cocorico is often busy with both takeaway and sit in customers - for good reason - yet despite being a small two person team, Ana and Mika always find time to make you feel welcome and deliver consistently yummy food and good service.
I was bit confused/surprised to read a previous negative review regarding a visit with babies/prams. We have been in several times with our little one from newborn to now (he is now 10 months) and nothing has ever been too much trouble. As with many cafes and restaurants in Edinburgh, visiting with prams is always going to be hit or miss (why do they make prams so enormous?!) so we do our best to message ahead to make sure we aren't going to take up too much space and can secure a table that suits our needs/doesn't impact on movement around the cafe but every time we have popped by unplanned, Ana and Mika have done there best to squeeze us in (quite literally at times, helping me squeeze our rather wide pram through the door when I'm alone! š) and we have felt relaxed and looked after.
Despite a small bathroom space they have still gone to the effort of providing fold away changing facilities, which makes such a difference when visiting with our wee one too!
Whether you are visiting alone, with a friend, as a group or with children (or fur babies!) in tow, you can be sure that you will be welcomed in and looked after. Just remember to book ahead at peak times like weekends as it's a very...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI've had the pleasure of following Ana and Mickael's culinary journey for over fifteen years, from their Water of Leith Bistro days on Coburg Street, through Canonmills and now at Cocorico on Jane Street. What keeps me coming back is the genuine bistro atmosphere they've cultivated.
Cocorico offers something wonderfully authentic in an era of high-efficiency, Instagram-optimised eateries. You won't find people eating a room-temp grain bowl under a pink neon sign that says āLiving My Best Lifeā in cursive here. Instead, you'll experience a warm, lived-in space where the focus is on connection, conversation and great food.
The menu celebrates simple, fresh ingredients prepared with unmistakable French influence. Each dish arrives with care and attention. I love the main options (croque monsieur and varieties) but the specials are always carefully considered seasonal cooking. I particularly recommend their Ćles flottantes, which I find hard to resist and look at regretfully when I can't make the day they are made. Ana has declined my suggestions about home delivery options.
Yes, it's tucked away in an industrial corner of Leith - a port with historic French connections from the Auld Alliance days ā but this makes Cocorico feel like a perfectly placed hidden gem worth seeking out. After fifteen years of loyalty to Ana and Mickael's vision, I can confidently say they've created something special...
