I wrote a very positive review 4 years ago, noting that the toasties are lovely but the staff weren't outgoing. I'm revising that now, as the last three times I've been in, the woman behind the counter - not always the same one - was clearly not interested, a she was flirting with the man she was making a coffee for. Each time, I've been the only other customer, and each time, I've not even been acknowledged, which is both rude and bad business: this time, after waiting four minutes at the counter with the toasties I had selected, I put them back and walked out, and I won't be back. I've been coming to Coffee Angel in Canonmills on a regular basis ever since they opened. The man who is often there - maybe he's the owner? - has always managed to greet me and others even while he's making a coffee or toasting something for another customer. Today, after leaving Coffee Angel, I ended up at Costa, with their very delicious egg and spinach roll (£3.55), where I was greeted warmly even though they had a queue of around 7 or 8 people. There's something very wrong when you're welcomed at a very busy coffeeshop which is one of a chain of around 4,000 shops in the UK, but not when you are one of only two people at the front counter of a chain of two shops, and have been a regular customer there since it...
Read moreThere’s an art to making a good latte. First of all, the coffee needs to be the right strength, the milk at the right temperature and there should be just enough froth to coat your top lip but no more. Coffee Angel has clearly read my mind on this front, as this is exactly how it serves its coffee.
If you’re looking for something to nibble on with your cappuccino, Coffee Angel has an array of cakes and cookies for you to choose from. More substantial offerings come in the way of soups and sandwiches, which are always fresh and tasty.
So what are the surroundings like where you are going to drink all of this coffee and eat all of this cake? Well, Coffee Angel is light and airy, and despite being a large premises, the owners have resisted the temptation to cram in as much seating as possible. Rather, large leather couches and circular tables provide comfort and relaxation.
Coffee Angel is unique in that it has clientele of all ages. Mums gather with their babies in the morning, and in the afternoon it’s awash with people from all different stages in life. A lovely coffee shop, it definitely holds its own in an area that is renowned for...
Read moreThere were always a couple of cafes in Canonmills, but it felt like Coffee Angel was the start of the tipping point that seemed to encourage a lot more to open and the whole area has a lively buzz about it. It's a charming place with a good amount of seating (although can be busy at times) and serves a wide range of sandwiches toasties and cakes. It's not really a 'go to' place for me, more if I'm passing. But if you're in the area, maybe coming back into town from the Botanics, it's a an excellent choice for lunch or mid afternoon cake. I've always had friendly...
